It is a mistake to power down the monitor too quickly. Cycling on and off leads to increased breakdowns, which is no savings at all considering how much power is used to build a new monitor. It took a long time for the electrical engineers to cure me from turning my monitor off for lunch. Go 'blank' fast but have it power down only after a protracted time.
