Thread: Cursors get messed up on Vista Home Premium |

I installed the UD agent on my Windows Vista Home Premium machine, 2 GB RAM, Centrino Duo Core.
When I open the Grid Agent window, all my cursors get messed up and don't return to normal until I shut down the UD agent completely (kill it). By "messed up" I mean that all my cursors get some sort of a thick, black, ugly "shadow", even after I close the UD agent window. I have to kill the UD application to restore my cursors. Anyone out there who's solved this problem? Is there any plan to officially support the UD agent on Vista? It took me a long time to get it to work on Vista; obviously the UD agent software is bugged by problems on Vista.  |

No, there are as yet no Vista adaptation plans for the WCG(UD) agent, but we are collecting all the knowledge and workarounds and threads in a Start Here forum post for those on this new OS:

Hi herman3101,
If there is no video driver update available, I suggest removing the WCG (UD) icon from your startup directory and installing BOINC as a test. If UD fails, try BOINC. If BOINC fails, try UD. Remember that Vista does not like having work files written to in the Program Files directory, so install in C:\BOINC or some similar directory outside of Program Files. Lawrence |

Best guess momentarily is that the Agent display is a fixed size format and the Vista drivers not dealing with it properly. Minimizing the agent and all other apps, hitting F5 might refresh..... or migrate to BOINC which is multitasking, and with Vista - is likely running on Multi-Core PCs - able to buffer and double the number of jobs processed per day.
----------------------------------------We take advise from anyone whom seen the problem and found a solution: Question: What videocard do you have Make/Version/Driver-version? e.g. Nvidia has latest WHQ drivers from the manufacturer v 158.18 for Geforce 6/7/8 series. They and most all others have a special driver download page for the latest. Watch out that the drivers are in 32 and 64 bit.

The minimize, refresh and BOINC upgrade didn't solve the cursor problem.
I have a Mobile Intel 945GM Express Chipset display adapter running Intel's (latest) 7.14.10.114 driver version. Well if exiting the WCG(UD) agent and starting BOINC does not change anything to the fat cursor, i cannot but think strongly in the direction of the video drivers needing an update and or the display configuration. If borderline video, this 'acqua' or whatever it's called for Vista takes enormous amounts of memory.
----------------------------------------See you running in 1280x800 60 hz. Try switching display resolution to e.g. 1024x800.

Weird, weird Windows!
Although switching to a lower resolution didn't help, switching back to the higher (or a different) resolution restored the cursor. It seems akin to a "display refresh". The steps were: 1. Changed the resolution to 1024x768 2. Opened the UD console - cursors promptly became "fat" 3. Minimized (closed) the UD console - cursors remained on a high-fat diet 4. Changed the resolution back to 1280x800 - viola! Cursors were back to their normal, lean, high-protein looks. 5. Resolved to let Jenny Craig and NutriSystem know about this wonderful "fat loss" technique Thanks everyone for your help! |
