Kneed... yes that is my machine ID. Well one of several machines.
Also, I will bring back my 'connect every 7 days' to 3.0 days and see what happens. |

Yes, the BOINC algorithm has been changed. 5.5 days was causing problems. 3 to 3.5 days seems to be working well. I see the limit of "50" every now and then, but there have always been enough workunits sitting around to carry me through until 0000 UTC when I can get more.
----------------------------------------There's another "gotcha" that the algorithm may be considering. The due date for most workunits here is 7 days. What happens if you still have workunits waiting around when you want to get more? What if you have a power failure for a day or two, or your little sister turns off your computers. They become past due, and may or may not get credit when they are finished. Building in a little padding can't hurt.

Retsof - The longest it takes for any WU/PC combo in my posession is 28 FAAH hours on a Dual Xeon (Netburst)@ 3Ghz. Its a heavily overworked PC that runs 24 VM's at the same time as 4 WCG WU's hence the long WU time.
----------------------------------------The others take anything from 1-4.5 hours for any WU. As for little sister turing off PC's? This one made me laugh. I do have a little sister, shes 23. The last time she touched my PC she put her hand in a very high speed 120mm fan cooler that was case mounted. She seen the pretty blue leds and just like an insect.... well... her fingers are ok. Needless to say, my PC is a no-go area, punishable by amputation As for the same PC, I had allways told my grandmother that that PC HAD to stay on... and that I couldn't turn it off. I had learned afterwards that she considered the PC absolutely impossible to turn off. She lost the meaning a little... ![]() EDIT: BTW, back at XtremeSystems there will be a MAY challenge between XS_THE_MACHINE (my sub team for May) and XS_Team_Admin. Pick up the popcorn guys and watch. Should be fun for everyone involved. [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Apr 29, 2007 3:28:21 PM] |

No-one who replied to your post has mentioned it, but which version of the BOINC client are your running?
I found that BOINC 5.4.x was very lax about keeping the work queue topped up. I would almost run out of WUs before it would download more. This has been much improved in BOINC 5.8.x, which will download more WUs if the queue is only about 2 down from its max. BOINC 5.8.x (x=15 or 16) does have a problem with uploads getting stuck. These time out after about 7 min and eventually do get thru, but I sure noticed it with my dialup connection. The benefit of improved queue behaviour far outweighs this upload problem. I'm actually running BOINC 5.9.4 (Win 2k), which is an Alpha release, and according to the WCG gurus I shouldn't be using it, but it's been 100% stable so far, and it fixes the sticking uploads problem. Use at own risk. |
