Good point. There are a few other security programs that also cause problems.

Hi vavega, long time no see. I'd wondered where you were hanging out lately.
Thanks Didactylos for the tips. After examining EVERYTHING further, it appears that these old machines will crunch the only thing I didn't have checked. GC (as mentioned by Sgt Joe) Cancer and Aids were my choices, but I guess I'll have to settle for GC. I'm relieved to say all seems to be working now under BOINC. Thanks everyone for all the suggestions. |

Well, I was premature in presuming things are working.
Six machines downloaded GC, and they indicate that they are processing, but they stay on zero. Error message is as follows: Restarting task 10001195-1000767_0 using fcg1 version 514 Task 10001195-1000767_0 exited with zero status but no "finished" file If this happens repeatedly you may need to reset the project. This message is repeated every few seconds. I've reset the project several times. Now, to answer a couple of concerns above, some of the six machines use Norton AV and some have no AV. One has a software firewall. All have PCAnywhere installed for remote access. I don't think a reinstall of Windows is necessary as they have worked fine prior to attempting WCG. Plus that might take one or possibly two machines out of service, not 6. Any further suggestions regarding the new message? |

Norton / NAV
---------------------------------------- oh oh, you got an issue potentially of Nortonian proportions. Hope the very latest updates and definitions are in place as this security software is known to mangle programs like UD and BOINC agents due false positive behavior.Critical v.v. Software firewalls and BOINC is to open port 31416 for the RPC communication (within your PC) on localhost IP 127.0.0.1. The particular message is as it says only a problem if happening very frequent. e.g. it happens if your machine has time keeping issues. Got it down to 1, on one machine only when taking the PC out of hibernation in the morning. In my signature below there is a link to 'Issue?' That's a checklist of things to look at working thru a problem. There must be a common denominator if multiple machines with one owner have the same problem.

try stopping pc anywhere to see if that's interferring. i have a similiar problem with a 3rd party program called rosettaview that gives the same error messages, although not as often.
after fad ended i tried rosetta but couldn't hack the 1% stall problem and all the arguing over points, so i ended up here for the cancer project. |

Well, V, you win the prize.
Had to shut down PCAnywhere for the rest of the machines to connect and actually do some work. Still waiting for a couple of them to submit something valid. Probably due to the fact they had so many errors, the queue got fouled up. The interesting thing is the two that began crunching right from the start have both PCAnywhere active AND are overclocked. Go figure. Thanks for all the input. I'm a relatively happy cruncher once again. V, I stayed with Grid.org, despite the dwindling numbers and lack of positive karma. Strayed away from the forums for the same reason. |

My karma ran over your dogma."deprecated project" could be something like Help Defeat Cancer, which is done. My slowest machine, 0.5GHz Win98, slower than [gunner] 's slowest, will only run Genome Comparison from the current mix of projects available.

Interesting with that being confirmed as a show stopper. A port conflict is not likely, maybe IRQ, anyway, used to use LapLink for years, so it's an item to add to the Issue? checklist. BOINC though defaulting to use port 31416 for RPC can be configured to use a different post. BOINCView would have to be told too.
