Problem with WCG or BOINC or my machines?

Hi all

Just transferred over from Grid.org and have installed BOINC on 5 WIN2K machines. I chose BOINC over the UD install due to the fact that BOINC appears to handle slower machines (which I have) a bit better.

I have received work units on two machines but the other three give similar messages in the log. A follows:

Message from server: No work could be sent
Message from server: No work is available for FightAIDS@home
Message from server: No work is available for deprecated application.
Message from server: (reached daily quota of 12 results)
Deferring communications for 23 hr 22 min 18 sec
Reason requested by project

I read a thread here about a similar problem, but the poster was using Linux. I have two projects checked and have also checked the box about receiving other projects if my preferred ones aren't available.

Can anyone shine some light on this? All 5 machines have been running the agent for 24 hrs without providing one completed WU.

Thanks

Hi [gunner] (English or Scandinavian?)

You don't tell us what BOINC version, but anything beyond the Windows recommended 5.8.16 (presently) should not be used in production until we get to the 5.10.x beta series of releases AND, only if prepared to loose work because of unresolved bugs!

Try unselecting FA@H and HPF2 in your profile to see if Genome Comparison is received (a guess as u mention 2 of 3 active Windows BOINC projects).

One thread discusses an extremely inflated DCF (Duration Correction Factor). Have a look if this could apply: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=10042#78929

W2K starts to become a rarer animal, but it should work. We had an issue with specific platform identifications, but would not expect it for your version, lest it's a regression.

The error has been put in an alert to the technicians.

cheers

Re: Problem with WCG or BOINC or my machines?

Thanks for the input, Sekerob.

I'm using version 5.8.15 from the WCG site.
I'll try your suggestions and look through the links.

I like the flexibility of BOINC, but may have to use the UD client if this can't be resolved.

How much memory do you have? There's plenty of FAAH work available, but you will only be sent work if your computers meet the minimum requirements.

I don't know if the fallback works if there is work for your selected projects, but it can't be sent due to hardware requirements.

Re: Problem with WCG or BOINC or my machines?

I run W2K on several slower machines(various flavors of PIII's and one PII) with BOINC and it works like a champ for me. Most run GC because of memory constraints, that one has the smallest footprint. Maybe just start with that and see how it goes. Good luck.

Cheers

Re: Problem with WCG or BOINC or my machines?

[gunner],

Please go visit this page:

http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/ms/viewBoincResults.do

This allows you to see the status of the work that you have been sent and returned.

You have three computers that are only returning errors.

The message

Message from server: (reached daily quota of 12 results)

is a message that you get when your computer is returning errors. The BOINC server has a mechanism that will limit the amount of work sent to your computer if it is only returning errors. The way it works is that for every error your computer returns, your daily limit is reduced by 1 (starting from a max of 50 per day per processor). Every time you return a successful result, this limit is doubled until you are back up at the max.

This mechanism is limiting the work these computers are receiving due to the errors on those computers.

The link that I referenced above allows you to see some information about the errors which might help you figure out what is going on with those computers.

Re: Problem with WCG or BOINC or my machines?

Thanks for all the input.

I've checked the links above and still have the same errors. Although these machines are considered slow by today's standards, they all have 512meg ram, PIII and Celeron CPU's from 700 to 1400 mhz, drive partitions larger than 20 gig and networked through a router on a cable connection. I tried installing BOINC/WCG on a couple more since the last report but experienced the same errors.

These machines have worked flawlessly with Grid.org for several years, so I have no clue as to why they would fail at this point. One is working, one is crunching it's third WU, but hasn't registered anything valid. It just appears to loop.

Five of the seven machines setup so far are strictly crunchers and have no other software running besides Windows 2K (with all the updates) and BOINC. I've uninstalled and reinstalled, only to get the same errors. I've uninstalled BOINC and tried the UD client, but registering simply results in "Cannot connect to server". I know this isn't a networking or a connection problem as I can browse the web on all these machines as well as monitor them via PCAnywhere.

Sorry for the longish rant, but I have no clue as to why these machines would suddenly malfunction after several years of grid computing. crying

Re: Problem with WCG or BOINC or my machines?

You're not going to like this.... but the UD agent doesn't do anything about errors. It will give you your points just the same, and throw the result out.

Which WCG projects have you tried? Select them one by one, and do a work unit of each. See if any of them work for you.

BOINC often detects underlying problems with a computer, because it gives all the parts such a thorough workout. To have a problem with three computers is very odd indeed.

Anyway, time for some troubleshooting. There are some useful hardware testing tools here: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=2490 and you may already have some you prefer to use.

You may also want to try reinstalling Windows, or trying running BOINC from a CD, in order to rule out any software problems.

And I almost forgot the most important question: do you overclock? Nearly all errors are caused by overclocking. It makes processors very unstable.
