... looks like you will need to visit the reprogramming thread too... What reprogramming thread? I entered "reprogramming" into the search box and nothing relevant appeared. I don't understand the comment, but I'm guessing once I read the thread your comment will becoming blaringly clear. ~~~ There is actually an abbreviation, acronyms and mnemonics post in the Start Here forum listing many. Some of yours have not made it there, i.e. you will have to write them out in full. Sorry, my bad. DTs = Daily Topics and CMFAQs = Community Maintained FAQs ~~~ No, we have no reason to apologise... I'd have thought that you would know my manner of talking by now. When I said that "I guess the answer is Sorry Deb blah blah blah" -- well that's just my way. Usually if I cannot give someone what they want... even if it is just an answer... I apologize. Mostly out of habit, I write the way I talk. And that's how I would have answered me. (Okay, that doesn't make sense, but it's true. :roll: ) ~~~ It would be nice if I could determine my unread posts. I was going to ask where the post legend was, but I guess that answers that. ~~~ Questions and concerns I still have... • The Forum Member List link - where did you find it? • The Test area - is there a test thread hidden in one of the other forums? • How is it that the "links pointing elsewhere in the message or the SIGs" are nonsecure in the first place? And how do I know which ones are the guilty/nonsecure links? Because I sure don't want to be clicking on the bad ones. ~~~ Is there a trick that the regular posters use to let you know who you are quoting? Entering [Quote="MemberName"] doesn't work, cause I already tried that. ~~~ I do hope to learn this forum by the time I'm ready to download the new cancer project. Then I can be a royal pain in the ***, but yet posting graciously... perfectly... easily... ...rapidly. ;) |

You have to get used to it. Someone mentioned that it does not have Daily Topics. It has Recent Threads instead. I don't miss avatars at all. Have you noted that the address begins https and not just http? IE 7.0 sometimes asks me if I want to display insecure items. I suppose those are some of the image links. (I haven't checked to see.) It would be nice if I could determine my unread posts. It didn't change after logging off and clearing cookies. That's why I use the Recent Threads listing. [Edit] The forum software needs to be updated. The current version is no longer supported. Download mvnForum 1.0.2 GA Binary package ...date: 21 August 2003 [/Edit] E. Frijters, There's a thread in the Start Here forum explaining various aspects of the forum functioning and also some added explanation how to search the forum for best filter result. The present software, in the cause of implementation, got slightly broken as far as the coloured envelopes in left margin are concerned. Being logged in or out can change colour as the forum remembers (should have remembered what you visited). Anyway, on the program is an upgrade of the mvnForum software. Don't know when, but it was on the planning list with an unassigned date. Features we wanted and thought were a must were put on a wish list, so repeating the repeated of the present offerings is regurgitation. If something does not work as 'expected', report it in the "WebSite Support" forum and we have a look and pass it to the technicians if deemed a bug. cheers

@debs
----------------------------------------I do hope to learn this forum by the time I'm ready to download the new cancer project. Then I can be a royal pain in the ***, but yet posting graciously... perfectly... easily... ...rapidly. ;) hmmm member since 2004.... no, 'pruning' is not part of the feature list. Not part of the program either :P Sorry, my bad. DTs = Daily Topics and CMFAQs = Community Maintained FAQs New Speak: SHFAQ's. That's what the CA's do in 'Start Here' (FAQ) collecting frequently asked pieces of factoids. And, then there is one in my signature too ;) Questions and concerns I still have... • The Forum Member List link - where did you find it? The link is handed like the anecdotes from senior to junior. I got it from another CA who's been member here from the same date you signed up :D • The Test area - is there a test thread hidden in one of the other forums? New Speak (actually it's not for you as it was called the non existing Beta (at Grid.org). Sign up is in left margin of your My Grid profile. The Fora are no secret (shock) and are in a read only part and a posting part. • How is it that the "links pointing elsewhere in the message or the SIGs" are nonsecure in the first place? And how do I know which ones are the guilty/nonsecure links? Because I sure don't want to be clicking on the bad ones. The pre-fix http or https in the address bar is a give away. Also 'www' or 'secure', but there is already a post linked to this thread explaining a very easy work around. Bookmark the location and make it a habit of logging in before going onto the fora.

Or, putting it more bluntly: the forum software is universally hated and bug-ridden, but running the grid side is the top priority for WCG.
It will be upgraded - eventually. Don't hold your breath - we've been waiting years already.... |

The Sunday maintenance run usually is from 8:00 UTC (the UD agent and Forum part) and 09:00 UTC to about 12:00 UTC for BOINC, maybe longer now due the large influx and extra indexing involved.
----------------------------------------The actual interruptions roll over different BOINC server parts. E.g. results can be upload and new work retrieved for a large part of the maintenance time, but the "Ready To Report" (to the Scheduler), will give an error message in the logs. See Scheduler link below for the details. Because BOINC by default buffers 7.2 hours of work, no client would normally have to idle at all. Just let it be and it will contact the servers.

The mvnForum software was not designed to run on multiple servers when WCG set it up in 2004, so it was modified to run on 2 servers. This local modification broke a number of features. the mvnForum group ( http://www.mvnforum.com/mvnforumweb/index.jsp ) has been releasing a new version each year with bug fixes and new features, but we have not been upgrading. They now have 'whirly-caches' which sound as though they can run across multiple servers, so if we do upgrade we might be able to start regular upgrades. But there is so much work being done on upcoming projects and BOINC that I doubt we can get to this soon.
The interesting feature about the new mvnForum development is all the work being done on supporting East Asian languages. We might find that useful. Lawrence |

New Speak: SHFAQ's. That's what the CA's do in 'Start Here' (FAQ) collecting frequently asked pieces of factoids. And, then there is one in my signature too ;) LOL! Sorry, I wasn't asking. I thought *you* were confused about my abbreviations, so I was defining them. BTW, I have been through all the FAQs. I swear. Cross my heart. Scout's honor. The link is handed like the anecdotes from senior to junior. Thank you. ]The Test area - is there a test thread hidden in one of the other forums? The above does not refer to Beta testing. Since I do not see a Test Forum, I was wondering if maybe there was a thread that the regulars used for testing out the time, the difference in posting modes, sigs, yadda, yadda, yadda. Previewing posts has it limitations, as one cannot compare posts side by side. |
