Friday, 1st June 1945
----------------------------------------Scotty and Bundy pack up their offices for the move, presumably eastwards, but we don't know where we're going until we're there. I leave my typewriter behind as it is the baron's property and "typewriter" is not on the list of properties the germans are forbidden to own. Friday, 2nd June 1944
----------------------------------------Rumours are buzzing around HQ. Coy. 194 Field Ambulance. We all know why we are here, but not when D Day will be. All reports suggest that Rome will fall soon and Bundy reckons that D-Day will be the following day. Saturday, 2nd June 1945 15 Scottish Div. is on the move to Mecklenburg. 194 Field Ambulance now moves to Div. HQ, which is in Schwerin. B Coy takes over Weinberg Strasse, near the Schloss Garten. The O.C. commandeers the big end house, formerly Gestapo HQ. Bundy's office is also in this house, and the cookhouse is next door. Sunday, 3rd June 1945
It is a nice, quiet Sunday. The sun is shining on a deceptively peaceful town. There is no work for the office. Cpl. Farrier has not collected any bed states and the office equipment has not turned up. The previous occupants of Bundy’s billet have left behind a book about the town, “Wirtschaftsplan Schwerin”, which Bundy now uses for reconnaissance purposes. A walk in the Schloss Garten proves to be very pleasant. |

Monday, 4th June 1945
Bundy does a recce in the new company offices. The Company Command Post is on the first floor, where the O.C. and he have their offices, the O.C. in the main room and Bundy in the antechamber. The door between is heavily padded and soundproofed - one can only guess why, but Bundy will discover, years later, that the town had had a Jewish community. One basement room holds a pile of wrecked typewriters; two are identical, except that one has a broken platen and the other a broken ribbon drive. All have twisted type hammers, which Bundy has to straighten if he wants to use them. Bundy can and does make a near perfect machine with a qwertz keyboard one key of which types the single conventional character, like a double lightning bolt, which is the SS logo. There is a “y” on the keyboard – where we would expect to find the “Z”! |

Monday 5th June 1944
The weather in the Channel during June 1944 was not good. General Montgomery writes in his memoirs: "5th June. We met at 4 a.m. A heavy storm was blowing in the Channel and it was clear that if we had persisted with the original D-Day of 5th June we might have had a disaster. But the met reports indicated a slackening of the storm and a period of reasonable weather on 6th June. Indeed, the experts predicted reasonable weather for some days after the 6th June before the next period of unsettled weather arrived. On that Eisenhower decided to go". Tuesday, 5th June 1945 A pile of papers arrives on Bundy's desk. These are the bed states of 48 hospitals in Mecklenburg, all under the control of the Schwerin district. Some of these are highly specialised. One of these is a hospital ship in the Burg Zee, specialising in the isolation of SS members suffering from venereal disease. These figures are going to need a lot of collating, especially as Bundy has to use his meagre German to interpret the headings. Bundy is now in immediate need of a German-speaking secretary! |
