----------------------------------------"We now go overland to Germany. More day and night travel follows. Fortunately, one seat has a loose back, which just fits the space between the seats, making a bed wide enough for five men facing alternate ways. Bundy and another 'Shorty' sleep in the luggage racks, while the tallest of us sleeps in the corridor outside, guarding our kit." Bundy is back in Germany. When he arrives, startled Nazis surrender immediately. Merry British W.O.'s & sergeants roam Osnabruck barracks, now a leave transit camp, yelling, "Tear down those blackouts"! |

Nazis bomb Rotterdam. In places like Liverpool, people parade with banners, saying, "CHAMBERLAIN MUST GO". Bundy, a Fourth year medical student, watches with mixed feelings. Tuesday, 8th May 1945 Bundy is back with his unit. A German civilian takes his photograph with Will Farmer for them to celebrate the official end of the war in Europe - but the fighting is not over yet – SS men occupy their peacetime billet, and the Wermacht (German Army) has to winkle them out. Meanwhile, they have not paid the photographer since nobody has paid Bundy, as he was on the move the previous payday. He has a temporary billet in Lauenberg, where everything is in a state of flux, with German soldiery swanning around, looking for someone to accept a mass surrender. |

Wednesday, 9th May 1945.
----------------------------------------194 (Air Landing) Field Ambulance is still on front line duty, but not in support of the Lowland Brigade or the airborne troops. We have moved to Bad Segeburg to support the German army's winkling out operation. Our favourite song is still "We don't know where we're going until we're there"! Tomorrow is payday - double for Bundy - perhaps we can still pay that photographer - if Bundy can find his way back to Lauenberg! Bundy, standing by for Wermacht & SS casualties, finds there are none, so recces the town. The High Street is signed "Hauptstrasse" but there are traces of its previous name: "Adolph Hitler Strasse". Payday comes and goes, but there is no chance of a lift to Lauenberg, as we are awaiting orders for a further move, we know not where. |

We spend a little time, wandering around the town, as none of us has any duty. There are now signs in English to military establishments, including strange ones like “Town Major” and “S.M.O” |

----------------------------------------Bundy has a rough description of "Town Major". It seems he is the senior military officer in the area, but what he is supposed to do, nobody knows, least of all himself. S.M.O. is the Senior Medical Officer. Bundy will soon know his function as well as he knows it himself, if not better. [Edit 2 times, last edit by Former Member at May 12, 2007 10:37:56 PM] |

Bundy is O.K. but his computer has become more and more obstinate every day since downloading BOINC. He can only manage to upload one file per day. The rest of the day is spent housekeeping. Here is today's effort:
----------------------------------------Sunday, 13th May 1945 The German army is victorious - the SS are now POW's, and the Wermacht welcomes us to "B" Coy's peacetime (in Europe) camp, Schloss Rohlsdorf. This is a stately baronial home on the banks of an inland sea. For our boys it is a rest camp - the Germans are doing all the "spud-bashing" and other housekeeping fatigues, as well as maintaining the baronial estate. Bundy wonders how the other companies are faring. [Edit 2 times, last edit by Former Member at May 19, 2007 10:44:09 AM] |
