I got the Pentium D 820 & installed it a few minutes ago.
----------------------------------------The new heatsink that came with the CPU wouldn't fit. It snaps into the board, the old one screws in. So I cleaned up the thermal grease, installed a new layer and put the old heatsink/fan back on. The old one is actually a little larger and heavier, so I think it'll be fine. Interestingly, the box says Pentium D 820+/800FSB. The CPU I ordered was described on the website as a Pentium D 820 533 FSB. The BIOS and Windows now show 2 Genuine Intel Processors@2.8Ghz. Now we'll see if it crunches any faster than that Celeron 3.2Ghz. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Looks like you have been browsing TigerDirect again. I just dumped 500 at them for a deal that i could not believe. When I take a strole down the server secton of that place, I need to wait until my SO has gone to work. Dont want any jelousy issues.

When I take a strole down the server secton of that place, I need to wait until my SO has gone to work. Dont want any jelousy issues. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I checked Tiger, but they were actually a little higher ($112 vs $99). I got the CPU from Buy.com. I keep looking at that Q6600 (Quad 2.4Ghz $289) or the new Q6850 (Quad 3.0Ghz $999) but I am waiting for a price drop. If I see a real deal on a QX6600/6750, I may buy it. The X indicates an unlocked clock speed for overclocking, with no X, the clock is locked. The Pentium d 820 seems to be crunching an hour faster that the Celeron 3.2Ghz and running a second unit at the same time/speed. So I did about a 220% increase by swaping the CPU. The power requirement of the 820 shows 130W max, where the Celeron was 85W. So for 45W, I got a huge crunching boost. I believe the Celeron was built on the 90NM die and the 820 is a 65NM die. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

im working on a way to get a mobo mfg to drop power by removing parts that crunchers dont need. It would be very barebones. the disk would be small and total unit would fit into a drive bay.
----------------------------------------A total target price for a duo would be about 199. But the real key is to improve cost of ownership. For server farms, this simple machine would pay for itself within a year of 24/7 service. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

What about using static ram (like SD card(s)) for a harddrive, would cut down on both size, and heat generation? Maybe not the greatest capacity, but results are generally sent back and not stored for any great period of time. ![]() |

I guess if you just wanted a machine to crunch, and had no other purpose, that might be OK. But you would have to have network connectivity of some kind, so a NIC in the appliance and a hub/switch/router for the network. Not having a sound card, modem, or a high powered video card could save power too. Most of the machines on our network have onboard video, but at home, I almost always have an add-in video card. Of the 11 machines here, 7 have video cards with 128MB or better. My lone Vista Ultimate machine has 2GB RAM and a 512MB Video card. Everything else runs XP. ![]() ![]() ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by cargod01 at Aug 11, 2007 8:25:55 AM] |

i would go around Bill on this and make the whole thing with the embedded linux approch. I have a test machine on a p3 running a crude prototype of the of the concept. I could extrapolate the power figure, but it would be only a very inaccurate figure. general ballpark at best. Though it should prove out the concept and allow all that would be needed to run this embedded server, to be developed without much cash.
----------------------------------------Yes, its SD that has the actual disk inside the case. Flash memeory wont due as the operating system would be chew up all the write cycles in a day or 2 of operation. ![]() ![]() ![]() |
