Re: Permission to come aboard?

A general speaking like a sailor? Really strange... how about those old "warm" feelings between the Army and the Navy? biggrin
OK, OK, I wouldn't tell anyone about this renegade. shhh

Re: Courine's Legs have run off?

I had to set processor usage to 100% and leave the (2) 400MHz PII machines on 24/7 to accomplish the meager results thus far after a 1 1/2 months. Not very efficient in terms of energy usage. I'm using 4 times as much electricity to accomplish what one 1.5GHz P4 would do in half the time. sad

I REALLY need to upgrade to a new system, which I'm dreading because of the cost of software upgrades. After the challenge I'll probably go back to crunching only during waking hours to keep the utility bill in check.

Onward ho, crunchers!

Hi becca, good to see you still crunching. Your score is excellent for the hours served.

Now where is everyone else?

You know with the current price wars, you can buy an entry level PC with no monitor for $299-399 that will run circles around those P2-400's right out of the box. Add $50 for another 1GB RAM and you're sailing...

Re: Courine's Legs have run off?

That sounds like a fortune to me now. Soon I'll have to sell off more possesions to pay the bills and stay afloat, or be homeless, or go deeper into the bank's pricey wallet.
For all your idiot machines do, they don't teach compassion...

Welcome on board, General. We'll have your favorite pipe tobacco for you in a moment. /Sharp Salute/

rose Re: Courine's Legs have have run off?

Thanks for your effort becca! The crunching you do helps build personal self respect. For whatever you are doing, you are doing this too. So, if you are shopping, you are crunching. If you are looking for work, you are crunching. So no matter what happends, you can wake up and know that at the very least..... you are crunching.

What I want for you is to do well. I have a linux machine that is almost done. and can replace the processing of your slave. But keep that laptop going. For it is not how much you crunch, its that you do.

rose hugs rose

Re: Courine's Legs have have run off?

Hi Becca. If you pay attention and are comfortable inside your machine, you can pick up a processor off of e-bay for under $40 which will more than double your crunching power. I upgraded one of my computers from a p2-450 processor to a p3-850E for $29, shipping included. It's not the ideal upgrade, but it did buy some additional power without a heavy hit to the bank account.

btw: BUMP!!!!! biggrin

I didn't think that would work as they were a different socket.
I have upgraded P3-450s to P3-800/900s, as long as the BIOS would support it.
I actually have a P4-2.8Ghz CPU sitting here on the shelf with no MB to put it in. I was thinking I would swap it into my Celery 3.2Ghz system. It's not quite as fast, but with the better cache, it might actually perform better.

Re: Courine's Legs have have run off?

my machine is a slot 1, 100FSB box, so there is a wide range of possible processors available. Becca's p2-400 may be a 66FSB, which isn't worth upgrading, but if it is a 100 or 133 FSB....

I'm not sure how closely this will scale to your processors, but comparing two of my crunchers, according to BoincView:

Celeron 1000
FPU: 796.9MFIOps
Integer: 1.378GIOps
Memory: 512M
Credits/Hr: 4.53

P3-850E
FPU: 708.3MFIOps
Integer: 0.9832GIOps
Memory: 256M
Credits/Hr: 3.52

I suspect the memory difference made more of a delta in the Credits/hr than the processor difference.
I would be surprised if there isn't a chart somewhere on the net showing exact numbers for your two chips.
