I just started this last night, and it's doing something odd. When I have it open to see what it's doing, it will either have a work time of under fifteen seconds, or it's downloading new data. If I watch it, it will go for about fifteen seconds of computation, then start the download again. Any ideas?

I always suspect problems with Internet security programs. McAfee VirusScan ver. 8.0 is particularly notorious. Another problem can be with an Athlon 64 with NX set. But if everything looks good on that front, try uninstalling, then reinstalling.
You can always Exit from the WCG Agent and send us a description of your system / software / connection to see if anyone can spot a problem. |

Joe --
I don't know if this is the same problem that a number of us had a month and a half ago, but we found that it behaved this way when the device storage was set to 10 Gigabytes. Reducing it to 5 Gig solved that problem. To make the change, go to the member page (Member tab above) and select "Device Manager". Then select "Device Profiles" from the list. You will see a list of profiles used by your systems (Default is often the only one if you have not made any changes). Click the name to open it and you will see the Hard drive space to allocate. If it shows 10 GB, try setting it down to 5 GB. Let us know if this resolves the problem and we can see if the WCG technicians can address this problem. |

I neither have 10 Gig to allocate to it, nor want to. I lowered it to 60 Meg, as I understand that's more than it really needs anyway. Let's see if that does it. If it really needs 10 Gig, I'll simply uninstall it and leave it at that. There's no reason a program that needs 50 meg insists on having 10 Gig to play with.

I changed the memory and restarted it. Now, it goes about 16 seconds before restarting. Any other ideas, or should I just uninstall/reinstall and see if that helps?

Hi Joe
Welcome to the WorldCommunityGrid A happy New Year to youIt has been my experience by reading some of the posts in the forums that you should set the storage allocation to a minimum of 1 Gig The benefit of setting it to 10 Gig will give you a higher total performance score hence more points per crunching hour The storage allocation only uses 50 Meg so the additional space is redundant untill newer projects come along that need more space for results I hope this helps Regards |

What good does it do to set the allocation to more than my currently free disk space? In fact, without adding a new partition, I won't *have* 10Gig to give it. (I have lots of unallocated free space, because I'm dual booting into Linux, and leaving room for growth.) As I've mentioned before, I only have about 2 Gig free now at best, and don't want to give everything to one program.

I've given it 1 Gig, 20 times as much space as it claims to need and restarted it. It's still doing the same thing. If you can't find a way to get it working by New Year's afternoon, I'll simply uninstall it, nuke the install file and give it up as bad rubbish.

Don't spoil your New Year's Eve. Uninstall it now. Maybe sometime in the future we can figure something out, but let it wait until you have time to give us your complete configuration.
Until then - - Happy New Year!! Lawrence |

What do you need? I have a P-4 1.8Gig with 256MB RAM, about 8Gig or so dedicated to Win98SE, on an always-on DSL. I'm using ZA and Norton. I'm willing to wait to uninstall if there's a chance to get it running, although I can see some slow-downs at time. (Sometimes things hang for a few seconds then continue; is this normal?) Do not suggest a more recent version of Windows, as I've used NT and 2K at work and hate them. I also consider XP no better, because I used to have to support ISP connections on it by phone. (I've over 30 years computer experience, and have rather firm opinions on what's good and what isn't.) Also, it won't spoil the holiday, as I won't be home much longer and won't be using this until next year...
