Tasks Ready to Report for Hours

Hello, Grid. I couldn't find this issue mentioned in this forum, so here it is.

I'm BOINCing against cancer on Ubuntu (Dapper Drake, Synaptic BOINC install).

The past few days, I've had tasks show as "Ready to Report" in the Mgr task list, but the messages seem to indicate that all uploads have finished hours before.

When I update the project, the report immediately "goes through" (no futher upload messages), and the task drops off the list.

What gives?

Re: Tasks Ready to Report for Hours

That's normal. I get that alot. When I get home from work I always look at the task bar and then the messages. If you look closely, when the schedualer requests new work it usually reports the completed tasks as well. Takes some careful reading:

3/12/2007 5:17:31 PM|World Community Grid|Requesting 6033 seconds of new work, and reporting 3 completed tasks

Re: Tasks Ready to Report for Hours

But it was surprising to me, not normal, Ms G.

Perhaps it is related to the cut-back from four to two daily stats updates.

Thanks for the response.

Hi Goedel (reminds me of several things :O)

Nothing has changed on stats since Jan.10'2007, so it's no explanation why you see them now and not before....or u were not looking carefully as Mrs G. observed, or you changed something.... less/different projects, longer daily computing, connection interval?

The process completion is always 2 parts and depending on the urgency of the reporting (due date), you will see the 'ready to report' sit in the task queue or not. When a job is received today and completed tomorrow, normally first the results are transmitted as can be seen in the 'transfer' tab of the agent. At the next contact when work is fetched, like the example of Mrs.G. the task is reported and the entry disappears. Now in your case, you probably were reporting near the deadline. In that case BOINC, by defined rules, sends part 2 of the reporting 'Ready to Report' immediately after the results transfer.

It's been discussed on the fora and is found if searched for "Ready to Report" (search with the quotation marks). The best line you'll find is "Opening and closing the database is the largest part of the report, so if you can report multiple tasks in one database access it can dramatically reduce server overhead." If u hit the Update button in the Project tab it will force the reporting, but you'd be helping system inefficiency. Mrs. G. lets BOINC do what it's supposed to do and BOINC reported 3 completed tasks in 1 go.

Goodoes to Diana G. applause

Re: Tasks Ready to Report for Hours

Goedel, why don't you simply tell us what you find surprising:
- is it that completed tasks are not reported immediately after results have been uploaded?
- or you already knew that but completed tasks are now reported much slower than they used to by your BOINC agent?
Cheers. Jean.

Re: Tasks Ready to Report for Hours

It is always possible to hit the project update button, and reports will be transmitted.

Just hit it once, and watch. On the other hand, if you hit the update button too often, BOINC will gripe about that. (Wait for another workunit to complete in that case.)

Some other projects run the report immediately after the upload automatically, so the difference isn't apparent.

Re: Tasks Ready to Report for Hours

Are you saying "do not" hit the update button when the report doesn't upload after the completed WU uploads? I've been doing this almost every day. Some days everything uploads and other day's the report doesn't.

Re: Tasks Ready to Report for Hours

If it is working, great. Usually, you CAN hit the update button when you have a report waiting.

If you hit the button more than once, I have seen messages that you sent a request too soon and more work will not be sent.

Re: Tasks Ready to Report for Hours

We Are! When BOINC is ready to fetch more work it latest will be doing the 'Tasks' reported as Diana G. so beautifully sampled! The penalty is also given by Retsof.... hit that button, report task an no work will be fetched. Than when work is fetched, it's an extra network activity.... there are sometimes 200,000 'Ready to Report' tasks in a day.

Re: Tasks Ready to Report for Hours

I will drop a comment in this thread.

BOINC is reporting to 2 different servers. It sends results back to a project server and downloads new work units from a project server. But it also reports all this activity to a BOINC server which is not run by the World Community Grid. [Added: Oops, I got that wrong. The BOINC CPU scheduler is just another process run on WCG equipment. I am informed that I have seriously misunderstood a description of how BOINC operates. smile ) The BOINC server gets reports from all the computers running BOINC for all projects and handles scheduling. Normally, 'Ready to Report' just means that a BOINC client has not contacted the BOINC server yet. Normally it has already returned the results to the project server. Having done the important communications, it is delaying an interval before reporting this to the BOINC server, hoping that it can combine reports about several projects in one report and so reduce the workload on the BOINC server..
