While today was a better than average day, especially for a weekend day, it was still a good day even when averaged in with yesterday. More good milestones again. It is extra nice to see Dave Bell hitting a milestone again! applause Looking at our Top Ten, I see old names, new names and recently returned names. That is nice to see as well. smile Barring any sudden changes, Alain Bryden should become our newest MOT millionaire this week while Rulkethecharon should follow in less than a month. They sure will not be the last either.

Re: smile smile Join "MyOnlineTeam" Today - Chapter 18 smile smile

KH I think people that have not produced any results or points for 60 days should be dropped from the rolls or retired and put to the bottom of the list or eliminated entirely-if they wanted to come back they could rejoin the team

Well, whether that is the right thing to do or not, the simple truth is that there simply is not a way to do that. I can't retire anyone other than myself. I've asked the WCG admins about this issue and they had nothing else either. I try to show our current picture by taking inactive members out. Hopefully, that helps some. Still, we do see inactive members coming back. I think if there was a way to do this, you'd see probably half the membership of all the WCG teams get retired. It's a problem for any team.

Re: smile smile Join "MyOnlineTeam" Today - Chapter 18 smile smile

I've been averaging 64.52 points per hour, 29.53 results per day, and a shade over 2.25 hours per result. But that's bound to go down unless the confounded WUs get a move on. If it's the returned WUs that are important, the method used seems like a long-winded way of getting them home.

Your points per hour do look low to me, but I'm far from being an expert. Try asking one of the CAs in the forum appropriate to the project/WUs you run mate. Are you running UD or BOINC? BOINC tends to give a slightly higher points to WU ratio, I think. Maybe not much, but it all helps. smile

Points per hour are affected by a number of things - how many machines you have, what kind of machines they are, what mix of project WUs you crunch among other things. There is good information in the Start Here forum on the validation process. Also, the other folks who get the same WU you do are a factor in when you do get credit for the WU. If you manage to crunch a WU within the first day or two after getting it and the other folks in the quorum don't crunch it until close to the Report Deadline date, you will have a bit of a wait for your points. Still, even then, you will eventually get them. Over the long term, your experience should be more consistent and steady than any few days alone. Also, if a WU goes to someone who fails to return it in time, the user t gets sent out to as a result has much less time to return it. I believe in those cases, such WU's don't get sent to just anyone but instead go to a list of known "good" machines. The validation process is needed to ensure WCG returns good science to the researchers.

I bow to your infinitely superior understanding of BOINC Keith, but that doesn't prevent me being ever so slightly peeved at crunching 24/7 to have the blessed WUs sit there doing nothing for days on end. It's not going to stop me doing my bit here, and I don't want to fall foul of anyone because of it. wink

Yes, BOINC has different processes. When you complete a WU, it gets uploaded back to the server. That doesn't finish things though. Once the upload completes, you'll see the status change to Ready to Report. There's a separate process that periodically reports those - and often gets new work to download too. Once the WU has been reported, it will show in the Results Status as Pending Validation. If you are the third user returning that result successfully (or 15th for HPF2 WUs), you will complete the quorum and everyone who successfully returned the WU will get credits for that work once the validator task completes validating it (that is usually pretty quick). If you are not that user completing the quorum, you have to wait until that happens. How long you have to wait depends on how soon enough users crunch that WU to complete the quorum. The Report Deadline date you see in BOINC Manager is when you have to return the WU in order to get credit for it. Normally, that's pretty close to the same time the rest of the users who have that WU to crunch have to complete it. If you go to Report Status and click on the WU name, you can see the status of the other users. You can tell how many other users have the WU in Pending Validation and get a bit of an idea of how long you might have to wait on the WU to validate. If someone doesn't return that WU by their deadline, you'll see that it gets sent to another user but with a much shorter deadline - usually 1-3 tdays. The mix of WUs you have, how many you have in Pending Validation at any one time, and how long you "typically" have to wait for WUs in Pending Validation to complete will vary. I suspect that with more machines, you may see more variation but then too, the variation you see with one machine may "cancel out" another machine. You just have to wait things out once you return a result. Also, what you set your "Connect to server every x days" setting in your profile impacts how often your Ready to Report tasks get reported. The larger that value, the longer you have to wait for this to happen - unless you want to go around hitting the Update button on each machine to force things then.
