In addition to the cost question I think that a big advertising campaign might also have adverse effects on the operation of WCG.
----------------------------------------If the campaign is good it will certainly attract crowds of potential or curious candidates that operations will have to be able to accommodate. Much bigger equipments, many many more WUs ready to distribute. All this for probably, one or two weeks later, keeping only a few percents of these newcomers as lasting crunchers. And leaving big equipments unused, more not-returned WUs than the normal crunchers would be able to expedite within the usual shorter deadline, etc... Do we really want this? |

thanks for sharing your views gentlemen. It appears that there are many views on this topic. Trying a different approach, how about offering WCG as a free download option with other software. Much the same way as things like the google tool bar is offered with downloads of adobe reader. Not sure of the implications of this.
----------------------------------------Could we get large hardware manufacturers on board too, in particular the likes of Intel and AMD. Please share your comments fellow crunchers.

Crooks_uk,
This is a great idea - to bundle WCG with applications in a manner similar to the Google toolbar being bundled. Now, going back to your suggestion for donations... I wonder if people are legally allowed to start an advertising campaign for WCG on their own? |

Actually only IBM is permitted to conduct an "official" advertising campaign. That's been done before (see the ads here: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/newsletter/viewNewsletterMain.do ). We don't believe that the results were impressive. Meaning that we didn't see a large membership increase following the placement of the ads.
----------------------------------------Having said that, there's already lots of "ads" on YouTube http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=w...ty+grid&search=Search There's lots of mention of World Community Grid at MySpace, it's on Wikipedia and probably other websites as well. There was even some talk about putting a World Community Grid kiosk on SecondLife but not sure what happened to that idea. That's the kind of "advertisement" we encourage. Bill, your first link is broken because of the right parenthesis at its end.
----------------------------------------Otherwise, thanks for this info. Jean. |

thanks steve. the link is very interesting, but I think it might be too much for me. I am waiting for the price of quad core laptops to come down in price. Does anybody know how this supercomputer would compare to the latest quad core intel are offering.
----------------------------------------Why do motherboard manufactuers not supply multi socket boards so that you could install say four quad core processors. with the low power consumptions and low heat, this must be possible these days without costing the world.
