Re: Donation

Hi crooks_uk,
to cover the costs of advertising - would it be possible to set up a donation box.

The short answer is - - no. We do not want to get involved in the potential problems of charitable cash contributions. There are charitable foundations that sponsor public information advertisements. Our policy of avoiding this activity is in the rules at http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/help/viewTopic.do?shortName=forum#17 :
Please do not use World Community Grid forums for outside advertising or marketing of any kind

Re: Donation

i agree with policy.

to request any type of donations apart from computer power, even for advertising, could cause people to become suspicious, which is the last thing these projects need smile

private action is another matter i guess...

biggrin Re: Donation

Are we still in the position that WCG will not accept charitable donations to pay for advertising, etc. The money could also be used to build a super computer or the likes. In my opinion, people would not refuse to use the grid if donations were allowable. I cannot see any conflict.

It need not be asked at the point of downloading software, a link could just be added to the home page. All finances/donations would have to be transparent to the crunchers. Crunches could also be allowed to vote on how the money is to be spent.

The would allow advertising to promote WCG and may have a significant impact on the processing power available to the grid. Please comment on your views?

Re: Donation

Re: Donation

crooks_uk, it's not that they don't want to - they can't. World Community Grid isn't a charity. I'm sure the lawyers could work something out, but by the time the lawyers are through.... you get the idea.

smile Re: Donation

thanks for the replies gentlemen. Its a shame though that we are restricted by law in our efforts. Has WCG explored the possability of partnering with a registered charity such as Marie Curie, etc. etc.

Re: Donation

Personally I came/come here specifically to donate idle CPU time and My time, none monetary in contribution. If wanting to contribute money, I'd not do it to some far from my bed across the border charity. For that, I choose to contribute to locally officed projects I can exersize some auditing on. Overall think it's entirely outside the objectives of WCG and just dilutes the efforts and in cases will even keep some away.... oh no not another one. Lets stick to the still very unknown computational attack of fighting diseases and causes of deseasing and doubling the energy to spreading the word of this.

Re: Donation

I think NO. We contribute our pc time and outside of that if we wish to make contributions ( which I do to WWF,IFAW. Greenpeace and HIV fund in Holland plus more) that is up to us.

Re: Donation

I like the idea behind this thread... we are still rather small compared to the number of computers sitting idle all day long. A snazzy commercial (YOU can help HIV and cancer with your computer - find out how) or some ads in print would really help "spread the word", but the problem is funding. I understand the legal limitations and WCG's policy though...
