I've had this exact error trying to upgrade the 5.4.9 client. What I ended up doing is finding the install file for the 5.4.9 version and re-running it. When you do this it asks you if you want to repair or uninstall. I chose uninstall. Then I proceeded to install the 5.4.11 client(or 5.8.8). This happened on every version of 5.4.9 I had. From that time on I have all the versions of boinc on a network drive I can access just in case this happens again. -Brink brinktastee, *that* worked. I had to run the 5.4.9 version, and chose the "uninstall" option. I must have had an uninstall problem when I installed 5.4.11. Under Control panel (XP Pro sp-2), it showed that I had the Boinc 5.4.9 client installed. However, when opening Boinc, it show that I *was* running 5.4.11. Anyways, after uninstalling 5.4.9, I shut down Boinc 5.4.11, then successully installed Boinc 5.8.8. Much obliged with your advice! Hope the CA Mods will have this in Boinc read-only faqs along with your later link to older Boinc installs. ![]() ---------------------------------------- [Edit 1 times, last edit by Johnny Cool at Feb 5, 2007 9:28:05 PM] |

Is it just me or did "The Lazy Slug's" web site go away? I'm at work and can't get there. (3:48 PM CDT) That site is very helpful to me when pushing out boinc via Novell Zenworks and a transform. I hope it come back soon ![]() |

Perhaps the slug was too lazy to pay his domain fee. If I post the main site, it goes here, to a domain host:
----------------------------------------http://www.123-reg.co.uk/ I have had no problems installing over the top of BOINC if I exit the application and exit BOINC first. Sometimes it asks for a repair, and I simply run that also. I have even stopped 5.8.15 and reinstalled 5.4.11...and then reinstalled 5.8.15.

[2cents]My generalized experience is when upgrading BOINC to a newer level, I would suspend the project (only crunch WCG), exit BOINC and install over the existing. Newer level will shut BOINC down for you eliminating that step. No problems or errors upgrading - Windows platform. When regressing your BOINC level (for me, this was 5.8.x back to 5.4.11), I would shut down BOINC and install over existing newer level, BOINC would error starting from the end of the install. I would then re-run the install (not the download) and choose the "repair" option and the older level of BOINC would start and run fine.[/2cents]

The Windows installer handles everything. Do NOT delete any files. Do NOT exit BOINC. Simply download and run the installer (as an administrator). It will shut down BOINC, delete the old files (keeping work in progress) and install the new files automatically. It really should be as simple as that. i was putting of upgrading to newer boinc, worried about pain and hassle but i have to say i did exactly as u said as above and it worked a treat, about 3 minutes , simple. on 2 windows xp machines, very happy, i still have one machine offline waiting for a new fan ( it is easter and shops shut) but i suspect it will go equally as well.. with the ability to compress files thre should be a nice saving of bandwidth $ time etc, well done to those involved in this advance! PS i wonder if my linux box will go ok?? will let youse know.. when i am at full power i have 4 machines with a total of 6 cores 24/7 on wcg so am very happy about the compression advance.. ( i also have a PS3 going 24/7 on folding@home so u can understand that i am delighted about this.. cheers |

I'm learning more about the Linux install options every day. Currently, if you use Debian or Ubuntu, use Synaptic to install boinc_client and boinc_manager. Everything works beautifully.
If you use Portage, avoid the BOINC package. It seems to have issues. The official (very basic) setup script from Berkeley works fine, but doesn't do much for you. It doesn't even run BOINC automatically. |
