I do know the newer version (5.8.0) will install over 5.7.5 while it is still running but I've not tried the older versions. It will even shut down the service first, if installed that way, and then restart it when done the install. Why the hesitation to try 5.8.0? Seems to be a solid beta. FYI...Just installed 5.8.0 on a remote client over 5.4.11 without shutting down client. It worked perfectly. Shut the client down itself and then restarted where it left off. The only possible issue is that BoincView now doesn't recognize the network and preference settings on this machine. That will likely sort itself out I suspect. Cheers. ozylynx ![]() |

More roads lead to Rome, the most prominent one the 'Tiburtina'.... same goes for ways of installing BOINC.... there is regrettably not a one size fits all as JC's case proofs :-|
----------------------------------------As for 5.8.0, bar the poor throttle feature, very happy with it after running it since about mid december. The strange pre-empting at 100% remaining the one disturbing 'bug', though that only causes some wrap up and reporting delay..... one needs to be careful not to close BOINC for it can cause to loss of progress as painfully discovered.

...same goes for ways of installing BOINC.... there is regrettably not a one size fits all as JC's case proofs :-| Ah, but consider your advice to him before he tried to upgrade, with JC referring to "those files you posted". Sekerob, I shut down the Boinc client and then re-started and deleted those files you posted. Then installed Boinc 5.4.11. Nada! All I got was a Boinc error 2573. You should always try the Windows way first, the way BOINC would expect to find a previous install. I would back up the BOINC folder first, just in case. As for 5.8.0, bar the poor throttle feature, very happy with it after running it since about mid december. The throttle works, but I agree it's a little annoying, especially when I was doing my power usage analysis of both BOINC and UD. Simply cycling between CPU full on and off using a 1 second time slice made measuring the various throttle percentages power usage useless. UD does this too, but on a much finer time slice, as it should be. The strange pre-empting at 100% remaining the one disturbing 'bug', though that only causes some wrap up and reporting delay..... one needs to be careful not to close BOINC for it can cause to loss of progress as painfully discovered. Please elucidate as I'm not familiar with this one and I'm running 5.8.0 exclusively. |

Apparently, there are certain circumstances where some projects will checkpoint at 100% and switch to a different project for a timeslot before returning to WCG and uploading and reporting the result. I understand it was caused by the BOINC throttle feature, and possibly by errors in the science applications (some misunderstanding between the science app developers and the BOINC developers). I am not sure it has been satisfactorily resolved yet.
You will only see this issue if you are running non-WCG BOINC projects. |

Some misinformation in this thread, I fear. The Windows installer handles everything. Do NOT delete any files. Do NOT exit BOINC. Simply download and run the installer (as an administrator). It will shut down BOINC, delete the old files (keeping work in progress) and install the new files automatically. It really should be as simple as that. Tried to upgrade to Boinc 5.8.8_windows_intelx86.exe. without success today (just closed the Boinc 5.4.11). Nothing! Copied my Boinc folder to an external hd and then uninstalled Boinc 5.4.11. ![]() The pic above shows that the Boinc.msi is not valid. How could that be? I pointed to where the Boinc.msi was in my C partition in Windows/Downloaded Installations. I tried another download of Boinc 5.8.8. Still nothing. Could it be a problem with Windows installer? What is the newest version? I have XP Pro-SP2 but I have not gone to Windows Update in a few months. Could that be the problem? Thanks for any info. 'tis been a struggle to try all methods in upgrading Boinc. |

Johnny Cool, from what I remember, MSI install files requires certain Windows features to be installed and it (the MSI program) having been upgraded once in a while.... very vague. This is a link to get 2.0: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.as...94-4255-b702-de3bb768148f
----------------------------------------& the How to obtain it . Try also to delete that folder with that long key sitting in the Downloaded Installations folder. I've got many installs done and have one sitting there from the last install with a different key than yours holding BOINC.msi Even ran a re-install of BOINC... it created a new Installation folder and put a fresh copy in there, but the same key as previously....links to the registry(?)

'tis been a struggle to try all methods in upgrading Boinc. I've had this exact error trying to upgrade the 5.4.9 client. What I ended up doing is finding the install file for the 5.4.9 version and re-running it. When you do this it asks you if you want to repair or uninstall. I chose uninstall. Then I proceeded to install the 5.4.11 client(or 5.8.8). This happened on every version of 5.4.9 I had. From that time on I have all the versions of boinc on a network drive I can access just in case this happens again. -Brink |

Sekerob, just tried that. I dl'd: Windows Installer 3.1 v2 (3.1.4000.2435) is available http://support.microsoft.com/?id=893803 Article ID : 893803 Last Review : May 30, 2006 Revision : 4.1 Same error message ... Went back to Boinc and noticed that the server it came from was: http://einstein.astro.gla.ac.uk/download/boin....8.8_windows_intelx86.exe Probably would not make a difference though. |

Unless u trust the Einstein download site, only rely on the original from the BOINC developers: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download_all.php. Not 5.4.9, but 5.4.11 is still available there for windows.
----------------------------------------Stumped, but a solution to upgrade is to do an install on another machine. Copy the whole BOINC structure and put it on the problem machine. Short of a clean OS reinstall.
