Hi,
Recently I notice that my pc froze at-least once while running “Help defeat cancer”. I am running UD and my machine is well inside the system requirements (AMD3000+ with 1024MG RAM). Suggestions will be appreciated. Happy holidays Thanks, dbmms my team |

Hello dbmms,
I assume that your computer 'froze' for a short time, then began running again without any intervention on your part. HDC is not just our project with the largest memory requirement. It also has the largest check point file. Unfortunately, this presents the UD client with an unexpected situation. The UD client automatically encrypts the check point file using a hard coded 4K buffer, which is much too small a buffer for the large HDC check point. Rick Alther could modify the way BOINC stored the check points to minimize problems, but he could not do this for the UD client. If this problem is unacceptable, then you can deselect the HDC project for all of your UD client machines. Lawrence |

Thanks for your prompt respond.
Actually I had to reboot. I wonder if I was impatient? What do you call “short time”? dbmms |

Hi dbmms,
If you had to reboot, then something else went wrong. This is the first report I recall of a total freezeup. Unless others have the same problem, I would just shrug and call it inexplicable. Did you have anything else running at the same time? Lawrence |

I will investigate it a bit more.
Instead of deselect HDC I'll crunch only HDC for a while... |

Hi dbmms,
Actually, this is not such a good idea: there is not always sufficient HDC work to guarantee keeping all capable machines supplied. It's recommended, therefore, to have at least one other project selected in addition to HDC if you want to be sure your machine is always busy. David. |

I see that WCG raised the PC requirement for HDC.
I guess I am not the only one that had problems with it. BTW – I moved that pc to BOINC and it is fine now… dbmms |

i have stopped running all hdc projects on my machines as performance was severely affected. running all remaining projects without problems. hope future projects will not have similar memory requirements as hdc.
