Also, I would bet that there is no chance of IBM breaking the law as they get so much work from the US government that it would be commercial suicide. I am sure that there are many people within IBM who do not agree with the law as well but they have their hands tied. The question as I see it is not so much a question of changing the law but the simple matter of adding cuba to the countries list. Anyone who wants can download the program ...even from Cuba.. Notice almost half the users here are not showing a country. Rather... how bloody hard is it for the Grid Folks to add the missing countries to the country list. Period. Its not about changing the law in the US. For IBM and the Grid to pretend that these countries dont exsit... that is the problem. So let the grid kill my account..... but on holiday I will run this bloody program on a laptop from the "non exsistant" Cuba. I wonder if the grid will refuse my results ![]() Merry Christmas to All and I will report on my Grid Crunching experiencein Cuba after the holidays and a critique on the rum and seegars. I wonder if I can buy a 57 chevy and bring it home while I am there ![]() Rudi the Red |

I think that an organisation such as WGC has to err on the side of caution. It should be simple for them just to add Cuba et al to the list of countries but the hardware and bandwidth at a minimum is probably powered by IBM. This can cost a lot of money.
Whatever, I hope that you enjoy your vacation/holiday in Cuba and that you keep on crunching for the better of the whole world including Cuba. wouldn't it be ironic if one of your WU crunched in Cuba actually led to a breakthrough ![]() |

That sound suspiciously like a newbie misconception...
This project is not intended to lead to breakthroughs in the manner in which many conceptualize it. And it will not be attributed to any one individual, and even if they were to trace it back they would come up with a number of individuals that worked the same protein. (it has to be tested more than once on multiple machines to ensure validity) You can think of it like - the scientists have a book of data on each protein and that we are contributing to the time-lapsed pictures within the book. It might be very difficult to ascertain any specific breakthrough from solely looking at the "pictures". Results will likely be obtained through the compilation of all the knowledge in the book and all the knowlege acquired in the future that may or may not require the data we provide here. |

Ok - How can I change teams to Cuba. Sometimes our governments are silly beyond any reason.

Harvey - I too joined this only as a world wide project and took pride in what we are doing. I still do. Unfortunately government sanctions are stupid and rarely work that I have seen and it looks like the WTG is doing the minimum to comply with the law. As an American I apoligize to everyone, but I beg you to remember why we joined and that it is still relevent and worthwhile.

I understand all about this. I have done crunching for Cancer research and the Pande group folding protiens. I know that we cannot attribute any work to any one individual (well actually we probably can but it would take too much extra work which could be used for better things.) However, every person crunching may help to provide the data which may lead to a breakthrough. I just found it ironic that it may someone who is breaking the law ![]() ![]() ![]() |
