Re: Are BOINC servers down?

Stopped BOINC on all pcs and have reverted back to the UD agent until this mess is sorted out. Gives me a chance to work the new MD project anyway.

Hope no data has been lost by the outage.

Re: Are BOINC servers down?

I also keep getting that same message of the servers being down. Is that why I feel like I've ran out of things to do??

Both of my PC's are trying to connect and both have no such luck :( This isnt good!! :(

Re: Are BOINC servers down?

The BOINC servers are still down.

Why? Their webhosting is in Colorado....so is the blizzard.

The techies probably can't get back into work to fix it. Some wires could even be down.

CNN was running some pictures this morning showing 3 feet (1 meter) of new snow. The Denver airport will be closed for at least another 24 hours.

Two of my computers are waiting for work. Two others are still crunching away, since they have the longest remaining queues.

Things will also be strange after BOINC returns. I was working on one project, but I have changed my project set to "send anything" until the workload settles down.

Re: Are BOINC servers down?

That certainly explains the outage.

Not much point in speculating why BOINC, or the webhost for that matter, does not, apparently, have a backup plan.

Re: Are BOINC servers down?

I'm not sure what will happen when the 7 day deadline starts hitting us. It can't be good. crying

My two waiting computers are now processing the UD version. (UD itself is in Austin Texas, which itself could get some snow in a day or two.) tongue The WCG version servers are elsewhere.

For this situation, there is no need to DEINSTALL BOINC. I just exited it completely. I'll start UD and get a look at the new Muscular Dystrophy, which only has an UD.EXE version so far.

I could also exit UD later and restart BOINC to run some other projects. I am hooked up to about 25 of them myself but they currently accept no new tasks unless I want to start some.

There are lots of ways to go with this to keep the numbers coming.

Re: Are BOINC servers down?

Hmmm....pure speculation on my part but these days, there's no need for server admins to be in the same physical location as the machine itself for normal stuff. Given an outage this long, I would not be surprised to find that they're dealing with a hardware problem. In that case, the weather and the status of the airport could be a real factor. Hopefully, someone will update the post in Known Issues soon with more info so that those looking at running out of work can decide what to do.

Re: Are BOINC servers down?

Not sure if you're addressing me, retsof, but the answer is NO, I don't have any work units in queue to hold me over. I'm not jumping ship, just taking a small swim in neighboring waters, lol. I never adjusted any settings in BOINC to allow for a store of work units. Perhaps I should, though.
It can't hurt. It won't help get WCG now, but maybe next time.

There are also a lot of other crazy projects out there. The shortest workunits I have seen can complete in three SECONDS on this computer. The longest climate prediction workunits can run for several months. (For those, they do sub-checks that give you interim points.)
