I really like the BOINC client, especially the later versions (>=5.7.5) with the Simple GUI and I've converted all my UD installs over. However, I've found a few quirks. I should probably ask these questions in the BOINC forums, and not here, but here goes in case someone knows the answers:
1. Why are there so few local BOINC config options, when the WCG site allows for so many under the BOINC profiles, and the local XML config file lists them as well? Specifically, I was wanting to change the CPU utilization (% and number of CPU's) but I can't do the second one locally. Is this going to be an option, but not in the new Simple GUI yet? 2. Why are the preferences options so completely different between the Simple GUI window, and the Advanced View window? 3. Why are the number of BOINC profiles limited to 4 ("default" and the three predefined ones) and none of the predefined ones can have the names changed? I'm surprised that the BOINC options are so limited. |

1) The Simple GUI options are designed as a simple subset, for the most common, basic settings.
2) The options in the Advanced View are indeed completely different. These are the proxy settings and so on. The actual crunching preferences have not yet been added as an options page. It is, however, planned. 3) I don't really know - simplicity, I think. There are plans to allow more profiles to be handled, but only by account managers. |

1) The Simple GUI options are designed as a simple subset, for the most common, basic settings. My problem is BOINC now thinks, due to my WinXP rebuild, that all my machines are dual processor (they are P4 HT) thus now runs two parallel tasks. One set of machines are not powerful enough and don't have enough memory to do this so I will have to create a different profile on the WCG site to specify they can only use one processor. This should be a locally configurable setting. I find it strange that an agent meant to be for the more power-oriented person seems to be dumbed down. 2) The options in the Advanced View are indeed completely different. These are the proxy settings and so on. The actual crunching preferences have not yet been added as an options page. It is, however, planned. Doesn't this strike you as a strange segregation of options? The two windows are so completely different and separate, it's like two different applications with no commonalities. The whole interface feels like it's in need of a major overhaul, bringing things together in a much more logical fashion. 3) I don't really know - simplicity, I think. There are plans to allow more profiles to be handled, but only by account managers. I did read Rom's forum for BOINC questions and he mentioned something about the limit on profiles, and how changes are planned. I certainly hope this does change as the pre-defines certainly don't serve me (not the unchangeable names anyways). Even if I only had the option to create 3 profiles but were able to name them the way I wanted, that would be good. |

Hello,
----------------------------------------I know this has nothing to do with profiles but I just wanted to know how to download more than 10 work units for the BOINC Manager. I only participate in one project (World Community Grid) and I run my computer 24 hours every day. I only get a maximum of 10 units everytime I press the update button. After these 10 units I can no longer download additional work. The deadline for these units is exactly one week after they were downloaded and my computer finishes almost 10 units a day. I wanted to download more units because I don't want the manager to keep on connecting to the server to report and fetch additional work. I've set BOINC to connect to network every 5 days. ![]() |

The Simple View is targeted at exactly the same users that prefer the simplicity of the UD agent. Most users will use BOINC in the simple OR the advanced view. It's not designed for frequent switching between views. So, with this in mind, they almost are two seperate applications.
The Simple View is still very new, though, so I think we can expect some refinements as we get feedback about how it is used by average users. I think the preferences will make much more sense once the full override settings are available in the Advanced View. |

You can override most settings at the client if you fancy creating a preferences override file. It's a bit of a pain but it does work (think it needs 5.6.*).
You only need to include the entries you want to override. Eg, the following global_prefs_override.xml file would limit the number of CPUs to 1 even if your global settings are 2. <global_preferences> |

This is how the Simple View preferences dialog works. As I said, an Advanced View preferences dialog is planned.
