About four weeks ago, I stopped getting work from WCG. I continue to recieve work from other subscribed projects, but WCG won't send me anything. Anyone have any idea why this one project stopped sending anything?

Have u changed anything in BOiNC like an erroneous selection of the 'do not fetch work' option when u were in the projects tab, with WCG selected? Also if you have a long project like Climate Prediction, and BOiNC thinks u got too much work to finish before the deadline, it will not get more work.
----------------------------------------Check your Default profile and verify that the projects are selected that u want, the work schedule is correct and the work u want to can be done on your computer against the System Requirements . If u made changes, to fix things, do not forget to hit the update button in BOiNC, to copy the preferences to your machine.

Thanks for the update, but I wish I could find something simple. I had checked everything you suggested but did it again and it checked out okay. I was doing the Climate Prediction project for several weeks, but terminated it because of exactly what you mentioned. I then began receiving work again for about two months and then nothing since 25 Nov. And I just noticed that Rosetta has stopped sending me work as well. SETI continues along just fine.

Hello garycgreen,
Could you bring up the Projects Tab in BOINC Manager and list the projects, resource share and status in order to let us think about this? Also, please give a brief description of your computer system, including the BOINC version number and memory size. Also, how many BOINC threads are you running? Lawrence |

All have the same share of 100
Rosetta SETI Predictor World Community Grid Yesterday after posting my message, as an experiment, I changed my global default settings on the WCG page...I changed the time to swap out a task from 2 hours to 1 hour, the amount of disk space from 65% to 75% and the virtual memory from 75% to 85%. I was just looking to kickstart something. I then started getting WCG jobs again, beginning at about 4:40 am. I got three between 4:40 and 12:30 pm, then the jobs stopped for the rest of the day. I've continued to get SETI jobs the entire time. The BOINC client is 5.4.11. |

I changed the time to swap out a task from 2 hours to 1 hour, This can be very wasteful. Genome Comparison checkpoints every 10 minutes, so 1 hour lets you save 5 check points, but the other projects we run sometimes will let most of an hour go between checkpoints. I suspect that virtual memory is the problem, since most of our projects use large arrays that are mostly kept in virtual memory since only small parts of the array need to be computed for any particular work unit. The only time u dont' loose progress is when u have the 'keep in memory' for the preempting selected as On. The very hi switching rate makes no sense though. Even if u set it to 12 hours and you have 6 projects, BOiNC will develop a switching cycle that covers a 3 day period. What is more important is the weight of a project. If 1 is set to 50 and the other 5 to 10, the agent will develop a schedule, sometimes even ignoring the project switching as it keeps track of the total time per project by accumulating so called Long Term Debt and Short Term Debt. It would be too long to explain, thus visit the Unofficial BOiNC Wiki , for detailed induction.
----------------------------------------Keep in mind, that if u have multiple jobs in a pre-empted state (on hold till next turn) and u exit BOiNC, the same will happen as without the 'keep in memory'. The jobs will restart on last checkpoint saved. Fortunately, the 5.8 version of BOiNC coming out soon is much better at checkpoint switching, to minimize progress losses.

Guys, this is all very interesting, but it's entirely missing the point. That was only an experiment to see if I would start getting work again, and it did work but only for about 8 or 10 hours. I am only getting work from SETI again, WCG stopped sending.
If you think it will make a difference, I'll set the switching up instead of down, to maybe 6 hours? And I set the Keep in Memory to ON? |

Yes, we recommend a fairly high switching interval, especially if you are running FAAH, HPF2 or HDC. 6 hours is a good choice.
BOINC has some very complicated scheduling algorithms, and they vary between versions. This is why we need to know exactly which BOINC version you have. Also, the key question is not "Why aren't I getting work?", but "Is BOINC asking for work?" Please will you look at your "Messages" tab, and see what it says. You are welcome to post a chunk of it here if you want. So long as BOINC is working on something, and there are no errors, you should assume that this is a temporary condition, and BOINC is merely being inscrutable. It will return to WCG when the scheduling algorithm tells it to. |

Again, u need to set the project weights.... mixing Seti with WCG is a tough one....try mixing Tanpaku with Climate Prediction and u r in for a treat.....individual deadlines play a very important role in the work assignment..... if it thinks it cannot finish Seti in time, it will not get work for WCG..... U would then somewhere in your message log see entries like 'not getting work, client over committed' or 'Earliest Deadline First'.
