Pecking order

crying

What do I have to do to break through the 70,000 ranking?
My laptop is melting, but you guys seem to be intent on making sure the bar is being raised all the time.
No wonder we had a post here apologising about a drunken rant, and he is a chemist and all.

You just have to send in more each day than number 70000 to get ahead of them. Is your laptop getting enough cooling? Elevating it so it gets more air might help.

I also see that you are crunching on the average 8 hours per day. What is happening on the other 16 hours? You have to send in more than number 70000 to advance. The other solution would be to get more computers. I have one from a Goodwill store and a couple of AMD crunchers, and my wife's off-the-shelf Compaq AMD machine.

Re: Pecking order

More, faster computers is the only answer.

Don't melt your laptop. a) you need it. b) it can't crunch if it dies. c) it's a fire hazard.

So, if it's really getting too hot, throttle it to a sensible level, or use the advanced chipset options. And get a cheap and cheerful box to sit in the corner and crunch full time :-)

No super fast machines here, no overclocking, no water cooling. Just more regular P4s that crunch constantly. biggrin

Re: Pecking order

nothing unusual here, either
AMD 64 4000+ 2.4 GHz processor score 238 (useful for comparing machines)
AMD 64 3400+ 2.4 GHz processor score 238
AMD 64 3200+ 2.0 GHz processor score 227 (newest machine hasn't affected the average much yet)
Pentium III/500 MHz processor score 50 (54% complete on a HPF after 117 hours)

Re: Pecking order

vote amd has gota b the most fiendish anti p4 team there is

realize ,har har were looking very stupid

n 4.5 million grid users disagree with us

4 the third time ownup admit the truth p4s completely out class amd

despite really clever routings bigger is better is p4 is grid computing n is relying on us to prove p4 is still needed in this world of small is beatiful p4 is a giant

if you do music or three d art youll need a large p4

promote the idea of continued developement of large chips back p4s equally on this part of the grid help b4ring dow n the price of P4 4.2s look forward to the developement of the 5 ghz machine its exactly wwhat grid computing is all about

i promise to repeat this argument you may have noticed

keep the faith run a fair game

i encourage all of you to repeat this line of argument

i await 4 your response on this forum again

Yeah, I did that. I literally stumbled upon WCG, and after testing it on my laptop, I found out that this was a noble thing. I then decided to build 4 dedicated crunchers as cheaply and cheerfully as possible. They crunch 24/7, and generate enough heat to make a difference in the house. I now rank about 6,600 with 190,000+ points.

I will soon upgrade the CPU fans, because those junk stock Intel fans keeps waking me up from my after-dinner nap wink

Re: Pecking order

The same principals of grid computing apply at the user level. Running computing jobs in parallel yields more results than a single system running jobs serially (even if it is a fast system).

Adding more systems is the biggest help. That’s what I’ve been doing the last several weeks. Of course, most folks don’t have a lot of systems just laying around not doing anything. I'm not like most folks. biggrin Multi-processing systems that utilize a multi-processing client (like BOINC) will also help since you’d have jobs running in parallel on the system. While I have a lot of systems running, most of those systems are at least dual processor systems so switching from the UD client to the BOINC client was a huge help for me.

If your goal is to generate more points, you will need more systems running.
