Phishing Scams

Dear Sir/Madam,

Barclays is hereby announcing the New Security Upgrade. We've upgraded our new SSL servers to serve our customers for a better and secure banking service, against any fraudulent activities.

Due to this recent upgrade, you are requested to update your account information by clicking the link below.

Does anyone fall for this kind of thing anymore? The best of it is I don't have an account with Barclays laughing

Dave

Re: Phishing Scams

Apparently they do. Messages (like from "ebay") are appearing more real all of the time.

1% of the solicited people still send money to the Nigerians, according to Readers Digest. The messages from them and others keep coming with that response level. 1% is huge given the volume of spam.

Re: Phishing Scams

Do you use a 'junkmail' account.... the latest garnering in the 'undesirable' folder:
Dear PayPal Member

We are currently performing regular maintenance of our security measures. Your account has been selected to be verified and you will now have to be taken to a series of verification process to validate your identity, if you want to continue to use your account normally. If we don't receive any response from you we are allowed to suspend your account. A verification page will appear after you Log In into your account.

Protecting the security of your account is our primary concern, and we apologize for any inconvenience this may cause

This one WAS so neat that it obfuscated the link addresses when hovering... totally nothing. Well obfuscate it to your delete box if you see one :D

Re: Phishing Scams

You READ your spam Dave???? shock I thought you didn't have that much free time! biggrin The girls can't be driving you THAT batty? laughing I heard lots of stories in the early days of phishing about malware getting auto-loaded to your machine just by your opening the spam. True or not, I quickly got into the routine of deleting unopened anything from anyone I didn't recognize. Oh, and if you ever want to quickly and easily at least double how much spam you get, just use the unsubscribe option on a handful of them. devilish

Re: Phishing Scams

kh, people who do that, responding to the entirely unknown and unsolicited in a way deserve it.... found a NYT article a few days ago http://www.nytimes.com/2007/03/19/technology/...a6abcf27f1c80&ei=5070
... there only a few hosters according this article.

Pity is, that spam is not routinely bounced back at the gate, preferably in a way that saturates the senders lines.

PS: You may need to register...... sure to get you no extra spam (so far)

Re: Phishing Scams

I get all the scam emails going around - the "Bank security upgrade" (all banks), "Your paypal account...", "Buy a Degree", "Karen wants to talk to you" (proof if I needed it that spam really is indiscriminate!)...

What annoys/amuses me is that at the same time, the "Legitimate" spam output from the real banks is increasing. So much, that a lot of it is starting to look like the dodgy scams! My email filter cannot tell the difference anyway! But, worryingly, banks seem rather casual about including unnecessary personal information in their mailings.

Recently, I went on line with a savings account bank I use. I made a small change to the way I receive interest. The system told me plainly that my change was successful. As a result, I received TWO emails confirming my change. These emails contained full name, account number and sort code - totally unneccesary - I already know who I am and what my account number is. I later also received TWO letters by post also confirming my change.

I have my current account with another well known bank. One day it seems, their Postal marketing department handed things over to the IT department. I - and I assume every other customer - got a marketing email which was obviously just a directly transferred POSTAL marketing letter - it included my FULL NAME AND ADDRESS. I complained that they had just shared my personal information (name, address, and who I bank with) by unencrypted email, with the hungry criminal eyes amongst 1 billion internet users. Anyone listening in could have harvested my bank's entire customer list - giving fraudsters the ability to make future scam emails a lot more specific and targeted!

Initially my bank was unable /unwilling to confirm that they had sent the email, but I did eventually get an apology (but NOT an explanation) by letter. I pointed out in return that I had 2 options to make the information that they had released about me INACCURATE. 1) Move House, 2) CHANGE MY BANK!
