confused GPU Stopped working! [Resolved, well working again!]

Suddenly one then the other GPU's have stopped working! In fact the error is really strange!

26/04/2013 19:21:09 | | CAL: ATI GPU 0: AMD Radeon HD 7700 series (Cape Verde) (CAL version 1.4.1741, 1024MB, 984MB available, 3200 GFLOPS peak)
26/04/2013 19:21:09 | | App version needs OpenCL but GPU doesn't support it
| Application uses missing ATI GPU

This is been working away on HCC GPU wu's for weeks, now it can't see the GPU?

Any ideas?

Win7/64
AMD fx8350/x8/4Ghz
16Gb ram
Boinc 7.0.57

Nothing had been changed before this played up. I've removed all GPU drivers, restarted the machine, reinstalled, restarted and still same error!

Re: GPU Stopped working!

Just checked, AMD Vision Engine Control Centre, CPU-Z & Speccy all correctly report/see the GPU.

I've also removed one of the GPU's, used different 6-pin power cable from the PSU and no change.

Boinc still reports the same error as in the first post

Software & Hardware in the AMD engine CC reported the same as another working machine

Edit - added last line

Re: GPU Stopped working!

That is strange but you might try uninstalling BOINC and reinstalling. It appears that your hardware may be fine.

Re: GPU Stopped working!

Yep, that may be an idea, but will I loose all the current tasks?

Re: GPU Stopped working!

Hi, Mamajuanauk:

I recently upgraded to BOINC 7.0.64. When the new version started all my tasks were still there as though nothing happened. That has always been my experience with the BOINC manager.

Re: GPU Stopped working!

Sounds like the OpenCL driver is missing. Check for it with GPUZ or similar.

If it's missing then do a complete uninstall/reinstall of the Catalyst driver*
*Note- the OpenCL option may have a check box when installing so make sure its checked

Re: GPU Stopped working!

Hi All
Many thanks for the tips. Don't know what caused it, but I've fixed it. Reinstalled Boinc 7.0.57 removed and reinstalled GPU driver etc several times, it eventually fixed the issue.

I rearly do anything but default installs, this has worked for several months, the strange thing is that the OpenCL driver did appear to go AWOL!

I just have to put the second GPU back in now and get that working.

Thanks again all...

Re: GPU Stopped working!

Hi All
This continues to be strange! I replaced the other GPU restarted and tested all ok.

Then shutdown, added a brand new Crossfire bridge (ie not the one previously fitted) restarted and problems!

Restarted, no difference still problems!

Shutdown, removed the Bridge and restarted, all working OK now.

Very strange!

Re: GPU Stopped working!

Confirm the <use_all_gpus>1</use_all_gpus> line is still in the config.xml . Particular with mixed capable cards that's a must and wont harm if not needed. See http://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/Cc_config.xml

Re: GPU Stopped working!

Thanks Rob, but there isn't a cc_config file and never has been. Only an app_config as below:

<app_config>
<app>
<name>hcc1</name>
<gpu_versions>
<gpu_usage>.5</gpu_usage>
<cpu_usage>.5</cpu_usage>
</gpu_versions>
</app>
<app>
<name>hcc1</name>
<max_concurrent>8</max_concurrent>
<cpu_versions>
<cpu_usage>1</cpu_usage>
</cpu_versions>
</app>
</app_config>

Also the GPU's are both hd7770's so shouldn't be an issue.

No idea why this happened, and doubt I will ever find out. The main thing is both GPU's are again crunching away!

Many thanks for all the ideas & suggestions...
