Barb - go to a craft store or an art supply store - heck even an office supply store, and get a "deckle ruler" - it tears paper strips really good.
The other big tip is to WET where you want it to tear - you can make a shape if you wet it, let it soak in, and the gently separate.

Not sure how you can ruin it, that's what it's supposed to look like! the first time I EVER tore a page it was hard, btu I love that page, it's still one of my fave pages. Yes, you can direct your tears, or you can just rip it up and go for it!!
