Hi, I'm fairly new to BOINC and the world community grid, but have been crunching away merrily for a couple of weeks. However it would be really useful if Boinc kicked in to life at start up. I am using the command line Boinc on Mac OS X with a Dual G5 processor. Ideally I would like Boinc to just sit on my machine and churn away in the background. If there is a power failure when I'm away and my machine reboots. I would also like Boinc to re-boot and continue from where it left off, without having to fire up Boinc manually.
Can anyone point me in the right direction to accomplish this task? I'm not an expert programmer or indeed an average programmer. I do have a basic understanding of Unix hence my ability to run it from the command line. Keep up the good wark all. It's a fantastic thing we are doing here. |

John, a simple solution would be adopting the graphic BOINC client rather than the command-line version:
http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download.php I haven't changed any of the default settings since I loaded BOINC 5.4.9 on my OS 10.4.8 system. BOINC opens automatically when I boot the computer and runs without an open window on the desktop. BOINC will leave an icon on the Dock, but that's not a real hassle. |

No help for command line...however I don't thing the GUI will waste any cycles over the CLI as long as you don't run the graphics, and keep it hidden. And with the GUI, you can set it up to start with reboot from the System Preferences. Also, make sure you don't run any screen saver. Just have your screen go blank when unused.

Thanks for your replies guys. The running of boinc as a service is the most appealing to me, as the machine I use has multiple users, so Ideally it would run permanently in the background whoever is logged on and even if no one is logged on. I have downloaded it and given it a quick try, however have not yet been able to get it up and running. I will probably try again later when I have a little more time to look into it properly.
Does anyone have any experience of setting a mac up using boinc as a service? Any pointers would be great and save me time. Failing that I will endeavour to get it up and running and post my findings up here. God bless you all. Keep up the crunching. |

Hello john72,
You have the option of running BOINC as a service during the installation process. The install package handles the details. Lawrence |

Hi All thanks for your help and pointers. I finally managed to achieve exactly what I wanted to do, and that is run boinc as a service, whether anyone is logged on or not. After googling around I found this page http://stegic.net/index.php?p=2 which told me everything I needed to know and following the instructions worked an absolute treat.
You should take a look at his site, there are some very interesting boinc things going on. |
