My BOINC has no COMM with WCG

I tried installing BOINC probably six months ago and ran into problems, so I merely reverted to the UD client. Last week I decided to give BOINC a try again; upon installation, I received an error message. I can't remember what it was because I noticed that BOINC was running, so I just ignored it. Well, that might be the cause of the problem that I'm now having. Although BOINC downloaded a work unit and completed it, it now has no way to report the results to the WCG. I thought that all of this would be done automatically, but noticed for a couple of days that my stats weren't changing on the BOINC agent, and that it was constantly showing a completed job rather than showing progress on a new job. Using BOINC Manager, I have repeatedly tried to prompt the program to exchange my completed work for a new task; I have been doing this by highlighting the job and then clicking "Update", and when I do so the 'Status' column initially displays "Scheduler Request Pending" and then just a few seconds later "Communication Deferred" with a 5 minute countdown, at the end of which the status lines goes blank, and then nothing else happens until I start the cycle again by clicking on "Update". My menu on the left indicates "No New Tasks", which seems to be a toggle button between that and "Allow New Tasks", so I would logically assume that it is set correctly, i.e., the last time I clicked that button was when it said "Allow New Tasks".

Now, it seems to me that the problem is in my device profiles, and perhaps that portion was skipped during the installation when the error message occurred. When I checked my profile, I found that the speed setting for downloading and uploading were both set to zero kbytes per second. I have changed them, but the bottom of the profile page has a note that says: "Changes to your profile will not take effect until the next time that your grid agent communicates with the servers." Well, if communication is the problem, then my agent won't be able to retrieve the new settings to fix the problem.

It seems to me that probably the best solution is to uninstall and then reinstall BOINC and hopefully I won't run into any errors this time; however, before attempting that, is there any way that I can save the work that I have already completed and not yet reported. I guess it's no big deal, but I hate to waste any work. Meanwhile, I am using the UD agent again so that I am crunching while awaiting an answer to this question. Also, any other thoughts on what else might be causing this problem will be appreciated -- just in case the re-install doesn't fix this.

Thanks.

Re: My BOINC has no COMM with WCG

You can install BOINC over an existing BOINC installation without losing any work. If it's the same version, the installer will probably launch in repair mode.

Before you do that, though, please will you have a look at the "Messages" tab in BOINC Manager? You can copy some of them here if you want them explaining.

(The speed setting doesn't work in your BOINC version, but 0 means "no restriction" anyway.)

Thanks. I'll try that when I get back from court. ... Errr, ... well ..., actually it might be working now. At least it is doing a work unit, so if it somehow managed to get that maybe it eventually communicated and received my new profile settings. There really has been a problem of some sort, though, because I've received pop-up messages that BOINC can not find a connection to the Internet at the very time that I am actively on-line. I don't know what it is looking for, but it doesn't seem to want to function as easily as the UD agent.

Thanks. I'll do that later if I have problems again.

Thanks. I'll go back to my profile and change it back to 0 again -- just in case someone gets it fixed.

By the way, on my profile, I see a setting: "switch between applications every ___ minutes." Does that mean that if I use BOINC to contribute to another project, such as SETI, that it will flip between them every hour? Surely it does not mean to flip between FAAH, Help Defeat Cancer, Genome, etc.

Cheers.
