Workunits Aborting????

I am running the UD client on a Pentium 4 system with Win XP, I just noticed that the client will download a workunit, run for 5 seconds or less, and then send the WU back to the server and download another.WU, then work for 5 seconds and then repeat the cycle.....etc.
I have no idea why this is happening, but I shut down the client until I find out why tis is happening. Any info would be appreciated.

Re: Workunits Aborting????

Plz Plz report in other thread. We dont know what it is, antivirus software, windows update? Just on Saturday morning i got further 'critical' fixes from MS, AFTER already having received some on Wednesday. They dont tell what they are pushing out and windows does call home every 60 minutes to check if auto-update is on!!!!

Had a few strange observations, but not a single work unit failed, either GC, HDC or FAAH (total of about 30). Win XP totally up to snuff, 1.5gb RAM, single thread for BOiNC. The UD agent on the second thread does fine as well....scouts honor.

Hello GB003887 ,
Pick one machine and see which project it is attempting to run. Then reboot. If it continues, right click at the bottom of the screen and bring up Task Manager. Then kill the application process (wcg_????.exe). If problems still continue, go to the web site and unselect all projects in My Grid - My Projects except Genome Comparison (our smallest). If that does not work, then right click on the WCG icon in the systray and select Exit to turn off the UD client. Then check to see if there has been a recent update to your security programs that might be interfering with the UD client. Which security programs are you running? I suggest using Belarc Advisor for this.

Tell us what happens next, GB003887 .

Lawrence

Re: Workunits Aborting????

Lawrence, u may want to copy your advise to the other threads as well....forgot to mention the obvious booting. The Belarc Advisor i only know as a diagnostic and telling which windows/office patches are missing, but not doing anything actually..... is there more?... Beta news sends me notice whenever the version upgrades and per latest 7.2a, nothing is missing on my box.

Re: Workunits Aborting????

Belarc Advisor just lists the software. But even that can allow a cut-and-paste with a lot of information.

Re: Workunits Aborting????

Right…

I have four instances of the agent running but can only easily get at three machines…

IBM Thinkpad 1.5GHz, XP Pro SP2, Symantec AV Corporate 9.03.1000, Checkpoint Integrity Flex 6.0.202.000
Total Physical Memory: 1,024.00 MB
Available Physical Memory: 506.26 MB
Total Virtual Memory: 2.00 GB
Available Virtual Memory: 1.96 GB
Page File Space: 2.40 GB

PC#1 3.4GHz dual core P4, XP Home SP2, Symantec AV Corporate 9.05.1000, Zone Alarm Pro 6.5.737.000
Total Physical Memory: 2,048.00 MB
Available Physical Memory: 1.44 GB
Total Virtual Memory: 2.00 GB
Available Virtual Memory: 1.96 GB
Page File Space: 3.85 GB

PC#2 1.3 GHz, XP Home SP2, Symantec AV Corporate 9.05.1000, Zone Alarm Pro 6.5.737.000
Total Physical Memory: 1,024.00 MB
Available Physical Memory: 553.06 MB
Total Virtual Memory: 2.00 GB
Available Virtual Memory: 1.96 GB
Page File Space: 1.26 GB

I experimented using PC#1 and found the following:
- Help Defeat Cancer will not start at all, the agent eventually giving up with the “You have something on your machine…..” message.
- Human Proteome Folding 2 will start sometimes but not others with same error as above.
- FightAIDS@Home appears to start ok but it’s a while since I’ve run this so its early days yet.
- Genome Comparison as above.
- Disabling the ZA and/or AV software has no effect.
- The problem occurs on all three machines. Other than the obvious and sharing internet access through the same LAN and modem/router they have nothing in common.

Re: Workunits Aborting????

Thanks GB003887, applause

Maybe somebody on the staff can make sense of this. My only request is that you list at least one Device ID#. Then let them run FAAH or Genome Comparison, in hopes that those projects will not present problems.

Re: Workunits Aborting????

GB003887,

Baffling. If u have the time and the ability to roll back your WinXP to a level prior to last weeks Windows Patching (If u did it and took a restore point), we would have an indication. My box is still running fine alternating HDC, GC and FAAH... not had HPF2 at all on either of the 2 agents. Use Alwil Avast (have been from the day it came to market) and Kerio Personal firewall. No Spam-filters or Windows Defender. Do not do the Monthly Removal Tool. Just relying on periodic multi spyware scanning (Spybot/Ad-Aware).

Did IE7 get added to those boxes thru auto-update?

cheers
