Have some Windows 2000, PIII servers that I want to run the Windows agents on. Unfortunately these servers are NOT ALLOWED to have connection to the Internet. Am I able to manualy download work units and place them on these servers? Then upload the work units to the World Community Grid when they've been analyzed?
If so, how do I do this? Many thanks in advance K-J Want to help with all the CPU power I can |

Hi khalleni,
Yes, it is possible. There are numerous old threads in this forum discussing this. But I always discourage it. It is too difficult, with too many problems that occur for seemingly inscrutable reasons. Lawrence |

What a fast answer, I'm impressed!
I did search for old threads about this issue but could not find any. Could you please post one or more URL's to them? Would be very much appreciated. I'll soon delete this thread since it have been brought up before. |

Hi khallini... look for posts that have e.g. "USB Stick" or "Memory Stick". Put the search in quotations.

----------------------------------------The dataset names are slightly different, but the function of the UD interface is the same. BOINC is too closely tied to the registry, and the dates get seriously messed up when moving workunits from computer to computer. WHY can't I ever complete that workunit before the year 1900 when it is supposed to be finished? The UD interface works fairly well for copying to other computers, especially with the add-on product UDMonitor to keep track of multiple cache slots for several workunits. With that, the default is grid.org. A BAT file must be executed for WCG. Yes, it is very easy to get messed up. It's easier to simply get a faster [AMD preferred for better floating point operation] computer on the internet and run BOINC. It's more of a set it and forget it operation. Another advantage to BOINC is that downloads and uploads can take place simultaneously to running a workunit. With the UD interface, everything must take place serially and must wait for a transfer to finish before starting work.

Steady on there, retsof: BOINC doesn't use the registry at all, except for storing the BOINC Manager window position.
However, BOINC is sensitive to what computer it is running on, and if it detects a change it will reconfigure itself: rerun benchmarks and possibly get fresh work. BOINC can be moved between similar computers fairly easily, though. |

I was getting lots of nastygrams, and the due dates for the workunit were reset to 1900 a couple of times. The UD version didn't complain.

Dates, right. But BOINC will do odd things on any computer with the wrong time. So will all sorts of software, come to that.
