Limit it to one processor in your preferences.

knreed seems to indicate there may be a problem currently with BOINC getting preferences from the server, so double check that the new preferences have downloaded correctly.

this problem has been resolved. So if you go to the boinc preferences section and limit it to 1 cpu it will do as told once you have done an 'update project' to get the preferences to your machine.
