I'm running BOINC 5.7.2 for Windows on an IBM T41 thinkpad with 1.5GB of RAM. The HDC work unit has progressed to about 24.5% complete and is taking up 0% CPU and is holding 350K of memory and has been in this state for about 1 hour. I have stopped and started BOINC and the work unit builds back up in memory to this size and then stops using CPU. The commit charge is below 1200MB and CPU usage is below 20%. BOINC messages attached.

You may need to cut your losses on this one. If you were using the stable client, then WCG would want to look into it closely. However, with the alpha build things can and do go wrong.
What you can do is have a look at the stderr file, and see if there is anything useful there before you abort it. |

Counted out the completed HDC 5.14 WU's using BOiNC 5.7.2 and came with BOiNCview to 12 all reported valid, zero failures. With introduction of Graphics, u might want to check out, that all those drivers are up to snuff.
----------------------------------------T41 rings a bell... some more problems were reported on this forum with those or T42 machines. cheers

Ok, I checked the logs and nothing unusual....could have been something to do with suspend/resume.....I aborted the work unit. I have current level drivers on the machine. I've thought about falling back the production level BOINC code, but was concerned about overheating from sustained 100% CPU utilization. If I see more problems, I'll look into the alternative ways to throttle CPU until BOINC 5.8 is released.
One more question, where does HDC store its in process files? I want to make sure something like Google desktop was not trying to index them or some other program was not holding a lock on them. |

All the in progress files are in the slot folder. BOINC/slots/0 or whichever slot the current work unit resides in.

U've been using 5.7.2 throttle feature? That as i understand is working rather crude. My hobby horse on throttle is Threadmaster.... real smooth, not on and off switching as u would observe with using the BOiNC feature.

Yes, the BOINC throttle is crude. I'll try the Threadmaster throttle. By the way, I uninstalled and reinstalled BOINC and this cleared up the problem...it was doing the same thing with a FAAH work unit. Uninstalling and reinstalling caused it to pick up where it had left off with the FAAH work unit and so far, so good.

Thanks for the suggestion on Threadmaster. I installed it with 75 CPU max and uninstalled 5.7.2 and installed 5.4.11. The work unit picked up running without a hitch and its nice to be on a supported client.
