Profiles in BOINCage

Hello World!

I'm a newbie to BOINCing, though I've been running my 2 other PCs on the old grid, fighting cancer for about 3 years, 10 months total.

I just set up my old PC, an Abit KT7-RAID that I got back a few weeks ago after the capacitor repair angry, to run Ubuntu Dapper. I wanted to fight cancer on it as well, and joined the New World Grid to do so. But then I found I had to upgrade my RAM to 768 MB just to do that sad. So I got an extra 512 from Newegg, and it seems to be running okay now.

I would like to optimize throughput for the cancer project, and I want to make sure my profile is set up right.

But I can't find detailed documentation on profiles' options. For example, I assume that "Do work only between the hours of: 12 AM (0:00) and 12 AM (0:00)" means no time restrictions, that the Project Weight ranges from 0 to 100, that a 0 value of the Max up-/down-load rates means no rate capping, etc.

I don't care how much network usage BOINC generates (unless it becomes extremely excessive). I set it to "Connect to network about every .003 days" (about 4⅓ minutes). Would a 0 value allow network connections any time they are needed?

Is there any relatively complete documentation on WCG BOINC profiles (defaults, decent top-end values, etc.) that I can check?

Thanks!

Re: Profiles in BOINCage

You don't need to worry about the network setting. BOINC will queue work, and will queue more work if you connect less often. As a result, the default 0.1 days is best for most people.

Re: Profiles in BOINCage

Hi Goedel and welcome to the forum of "New World" WCG's 2nd anniversary.

Here's a profile i go by, that has given me best result. Note that the connect time should not be set to 4.5 minutes.... that's very wasteful as the servers would be continuous polled, whereas a call for work is only needed every so much time, thus 0.1 days as mentioned by Didactylos is fine. More so, if the current work unit (WU) is almost finished, BOiNC will get a new WU so as to be able to compute uninterruptedly and simultaneously send the completed result back.

Advanced Options
Processor Usage
Project Weight: 100
Do work while computer is in use? Yes
Do work while computer is running on batteries? No
Do work only after computer is idle for: 0.1 minutes
Switch between applications every: 240 minutes
On multiprocessors, at most use: 1 processors
Disk and Memory Usage
Write to disk at most every: 999 seconds
Leave applications in memory while preempted? Yes
Leave at least: 0.25 Gigabytes of disk space free
Use no more than: 85.0 % of total disk space
Use no more than: 85.0 % of total virtual memory
Network Usage
Confirm before connecting to Internet? No
Disconnect when done? Yes
Connect to network about every 0.1 days
Maximum upload rate: 480 Kbytes/sec
Maximum download rate: 480 Kbytes/sec

If u want to learn more about BOiNC, go to the "Unofficial BOiNC Wiki" or the special WCGWiki maintained by a few Community Advisors of WCG.

cheers

Re: Profiles in BOINCage

Sekerob, bear in mind that the "Write to disk at most every: 999 seconds" setting will prevent BOINC from checkpointing, and will cause work to be lost under certain circumstances.

Re: Profiles in BOINCage

Didactylos,

I've got the view of 16 minutes 39 seconds can be survived when emergency occurs.... how often does the power go off up north? Every 60 seconds default caused on my box too much rattling of the disk, particular with Help Defeat Cancer. Anyway it can be tuned to the individuals stability of the box.

cheers

Re: Profiles in BOINCage

Thanks, all, for the quick responses.

I've set my profile to "Do work only after computer is idle for 0.1 minutes", use no more than 75% of free disk and swap (I have about 9 GB free out of 12 GB on my system partition and an 8 GB swap partition), connect to network every .1 days, and I left the Max up-/down-load rates at 0.

I'm set to write to disk every 60 seconds.

I also am set to "Use no more than 2 GB" in the Basic Options. I hope that's enough for the cancer project, but I can up it if need be.

I hope that setup is (pertty close to) optimal. I'd still like to get details on the device profile parameters.

Re: Profiles in BOINCage

That first setting has no meaning as long as "Do work while computer is in use" is "yes".

For more information, here is the BOINC documentation: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/prefs.php
