Problem with BOINCview and wireless adapter

I've recently added a new machine to my crunching farm. I wanted to connect it to my network with a Blanc BW-54U11 wireless USB adapter. The adapter connects to my router just fine. I can browse the internet and even access the shared folders on my other machines. The problem is that BOINCview(on my main rig) refuses to see this machine when this adapter is installed. If I connect the machine to the router with a different adapter or directly with ethernet cable, BOINCview sees the machine just fine.

I've tried everything I can think of, fiddled with all the settings in the adapters configuration program. Now I'm at a loss as to what to try next. Any suggestions?

Re: Problem with BOINCview and wireless adapter

Olympic, u might want to visit the BOINCview forum for assistance:

http://boincview.amanheis.de/forum/index.php

I'm on Wifi and it works fine. Are u on fixed IP adresses or DHCP? Are u disabling the Ethernet port, when running on Wifi? Don't know if that impacts, but that's what i did.

cheers

Re: Problem with BOINCview and wireless adapter

Here's a filter of posts on wireless connections on BOiNCview... oops does not work.... use word 'Wireless' in search definition.

One thought, u may have done it, but have u reconnected BOINCview by typing in the actual network name of the device and the password. It might be looking at the IP address of the Ethernet port and not the wireless.

cheers

Re: Problem with BOINCview and wireless adapter

Yes, I've tried everything you've suggested. I think it's just a poor quality USB adapter. When I try a different adapter everything works fine. Thanks for the link to the BOINCview support forum, I'll see what I can dig up.

Re: Problem with BOINCview and wireless adapter

Sounds like a connection specific firewall issue - if you are running windows firewall just ask to be alerted whenever an incoming packet is rejected - you'll soon sort it out wink

Re: Problem with BOINCview and wireless adapter

I think what he said in his first post was, that he put a different (wifi?) adapter on and it worked.... but who knows, personal software firewalls are quirky..... the Windows build-in firewall is dum... it only knows incoming traffic, not outgoing. Maybe the MAC code needs to be added to the Wifi Routers bridge filters (if its on)?

Re: Problem with BOINCview and wireless adapter

I just gave up on getting it to work and left the computer hard-wired to my router for now. I'm putting together a 4 computer farm in a server style case and thought wireless USB adapters would be the easiest way to give them internet access. But after some research, I've decided to use a 4 port wireless bridge instead. That'll keep alot of flaky software off my farm, reduce crashes and dropped connections, free up some resources and hopefully increase production! biggrin
