How is it happening that my WCG client never uses more than 60 % of my dual core CPU ? I tried UDTweaker to launch 2 calculations at a time but each agent only uses 30 %. I want to fully use my core 2 duo. Please help.
Thanks a lot |

You need to migrate to BOINC to properly take advantage of a dual core machine.

Hello djibeXX,
You are heading down the wrong path. First, the UD client is designed for users who need to be saved from themselves. It is determinedly single-threaded. If it detects another instance running, it tries to shut it down. This saves people with hyper threading Pentium 4 CPUs from running 2 copies and eating up their memory without realizing it. UD Tweaker gets around this restriction, but does not solve the problem caused by using a single named global variable to keep track of the state. Which means that if you reboot, one of the work units will probably be trashed without realizing it and will eventually return invalid data. BOINC is for people who cheerfully fiddle with the details of their computer. It allows you to run multiple threads, etc. Finally, we are introducing computer throttling to all our projects. For the moment, it is only available for the UD client. All our projects on the UD client are set to only run at 60% CPU usage unless the user changes the throttle setting as explained in http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=2683#61655 If you have a Core2 and are able to use UD Tweaker, you are a BOINC kind of guy. Look over these instructions: http://www.wcgwiki.org/en/boinc/migration.cfm http://boinc.berkeley.edu/ Lawrence |

Thanks a lot I stumbled upon some commentary that UD tweaker caused WU's to complete as if all is fine/dandy, but in fact corrupt them, thus at DPC they found alternate solution to run 2 UD agents....can send u the dutch language manual. That said, BOINC being the obvious answer, particular with all projects getting graphics....the 2 active on there now have it, there is a little throttle tool to bring UD agent up to 100% here: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=7701. The implementation of 60% was announced on June 23 in member news. Together with the Start here FAQ a good place to familiarize yourself with the ins and outs. cheers

There is a tool you can download to set the throttle, in real time, to whatever you want. You can read more about it and download the tool from here: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/help/viewTopic.do?shortName=cpuuse#230

I use the WCGridMaxCPU.exe quite successfuly. I keep a shortcut to it on the desktop so I can change settings quickly.
As for the DualCore or HyperThreading machines, I run Virtual PC (or VMWare or whatever you like) for a number of unrelated reasons, so it was easy to take full advantage of the hyperthreading by running the UD client on the VM. You may also want to adjust processor affinity (right click a process in Task Manager) |
