no work sent boinc idle for now

I have received the following messages.
Sun Oct 29 12:49:41 2006|World Community Grid|Message from server: No work could be sent.
Sun Oct 29 12:49:41 2006|World Community Grid|Message from server: Your computer has only 499 MB of memory; Help Defeat Cancer requires 715 MB
Sun Oct 29 12:49:41 2006|World Community Grid|Message from server: (won't finish in time) Computer on 89.0% of time, BOINC on 99.5% of that, this project gets 100.0% of that
Sun Oct 29 12:49:41 2006|World Community Grid|No work from project
Does this mean no work unless I purchase another 256M bytes of memory so I can do the cancer project?

You could wait for Santa Claus to bring you another 256 megs but you'll likely find that isn't enough if you run other apps while crunching HDC. Ask the fat elf for another 512 megs.

The minimum requirements are listed at http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/help/viewTopic.do?shortName=minimumreq

Don't run HDC unless you have almost a gigabyte of memory. FAAH will run in 256 MB. Which means you can run at full speed without a lot of page swapping if you have 384 MB even while surfing the web. Minimum is a tricky word.

Re: no work sent boinc idle for now

I have received another work unit. I was wondering if both fa@h and hpf 2 are running short of work as it took over 10 hours of my computer being on before I finally got another work unit. I should be able to run hpf 2 with a 3000+ amd computer. I do not seem to ever get one. I was wondering if the message stating that the work would not finish in time referred to hpf 2.

Re: no work sent boinc idle for now

RickTheBrick..... thought that by now it was common knowledge that HPF2 is on hiatus...should return soon. For FAAH we have work till at least Jan'07. HDC (Help Defeat Cancer), we dont know, but there are only about 20,000 WU's available daily, where the global all projects total is presently > 125,000 daily.

If u have selected all projects in your profile, u should be getting at least FAAH. If Help Defeat Cancer is available, u should be getting that, presently, 1 HDC to 8 FAAH.

U posted this in the UD agent section, so not sure, but in BOINC device profile u can specify a work preference and a 'alternate' work option, if any of the preferred projects runs out permanently or temporary.

If your schedule is to crunch only a limited time like 10 hours a day, than u should still get FAAH....the deadline is 7 days. Suggest, if u dont have more WU's in the buffer to hit the reset button on WCG in the project tab.

Cannot place exactly why u would be getting the 'not finish in time' message. If u post a part of the message log, 10 lines before and after that, we can have a look in context.

Oh and if the ol Crimbo does come by, say hello for me and do a good word...... like 512mb extra as well ;>)

ciao

Re: no work sent boinc idle for now

I must have clicked on wrong forum as this should be in boinc but I can finish a faah in about 4 hours and I have already finished the one I received and again with the same messages. I have default selected so I can get any of the projects but since I do not have enough memory for the cancer project and hpf 2 is not sending any work than I can only get faah. There must be a problem with sending these as I have received only one today and I am now waiting for another one. I do not leave this computer on 24/7 but do leave it on about 18 hours a day.

I just received the same messages from the WCG server, even though I had unchecked HDC in the profile for that machine. I just reviewed the profile that machine uses and the All projects box was checked for some reason. I unchecked the HDC box again. I'm not sure how/why it was reset to run all projects.

Re: no work sent boinc idle for now

Hi,

We're still in the UD section, for which I'm certain that if u update the profile like Default, all devices get set to that profile.....very painful. Not sure of the logic, but suspect its a way to manage a large number of devices.

Simply learned not to touch the global profiles and just do changes at devices level.

sorry

Re: no work sent boinc idle for now

RickTheBrick,

I'm not sure how smart BOINC is in respect to knowing not to request work and just give u one at the time. We really need a piece of your message log to follow the sequence, so if u please go to the 'message' tab in BOINC, hilight 10 lines before the 'no work' message and 10 or so after, hit the copy button, then past it into a post, we can maybe reason with u.

If u go to your BOINC profile on the website, there is a field on how much work to buffer. The default is 0.1 days (2.4 hours). Set that to 1.0 days. Save it. Then return to BOINC's Project tab and hit update to copy the updated preferences to your machine and see what happens.

Possibly, your disk allocation is too small? Set it to like 2gb. That also caters for the Help Defeat Cancer minimum needs. With enough disk space and buffer at 1 day, u should get new work, while the current one is completing.

Here some of my settings
Leave at least: 1.0 Gigabytes of disk space free
Use no more than: 2 Gigabytes
Connect to network about every 1.0 days
Use no more than: 75 % of total disk space
Use no more than: 75 % of total virtual memory

And please if running FAAH, use Hibernation. Depending on the number of segments, just switching it off can loose a significant amount of crunch time, as the WU will restart from the last segment saved.

Let us know.

Re: no work sent boinc idle for now

I went to projects and than to update and forced a new work unit to be downloaded. I have noticed that the time to completion has always been far too high. This time it started at 676 hours. This time is decreasing at a rate of more than an hour per minute of time. In the first 8 minutes is has decreased by 20 hours.
