I upgraded McAfee Security Suite two days ago. UD.exe has not been able to access the servers since. I have followed the advice I can find in the forum about opening ports(443), enabling program (UD.exe) access, trusting IP 129.33.89.134 to no avail. I have disabled bits and pieces of McAfee, also to no avail. Any suggestions?

What version of McAfee Security Suite? I assume you are running Windows XP SP2. Have you considered switching to BOINC ( http://www.wcgwiki.org/en/boinc/migration.cfm )?

Just downloaded Friday night. Version ##'s:
SecurityCenter 7.0, VirusScan 11.0, Firewall 8.0, SiteAdvisor 1.7, SpamKiller 8.0, PrivacyService 9.0 This is not packaged like the previous rev., so I do not find a way to toggle off the Privacy Service, as was recommended in posts from last year. |

BOINC cures the ailment. CPU is happily churning out results again.
Thanks! |

Yes, I too was in this same situation with the new McAfee Suite 2007.
I found the workaround: Add a new String Value (REG_SZ) called "443" with a value of "Ignore" to this reg key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\McAfee\Redirector\Ports and either restart the McAfee Redirector Service in Services.msc or just reboot. Worked like a charm. Steerpike_ca |

I guess one could also disable or uninstall McAfee completely.
Personally, I don't like cryptic, undocumentend fixes to some setting (registry or not). My guess is that this 443-ignore causes McAfee to completely ignore all processes that tries to initiate an outgoing connection to port 443, e.g. the UD agent. Congratulations!! You have now allowed all trojans, spyware, phising applications an unprotected outgoing connection to their partner in crime. |

I'm having the same problem. Is BOINC the same as WCG. I never heard of it till I started researching this problem.

BOINC is quite different from the UD(WCG) agent, amongst it can do multiple jobs simultaneous on a computer with multiple cores on a CPU. Here a write up: BOINC vs. UD and here How to Migrate with a link to a Step by Step on the WCG website.
