So far I am really liking the new computer with the AMD A10-5700 chip. Although it isn't terribly fast, for energy-efficient computing, it's beating my other computers hands down. My next-best machine has a Phenom II X4 910e and an AMD Radeon HD 7750. The new Fusion machine took about 1.1 times as long as the Phenom to run CFSW, and it takes about 1.25 times as long to run POEM GPU tasks -- all this at roughly half the watts. Next time I shut the new machine down for any reason, I'll stick in the Kill-a-Watt and see just what it is pulling at the wall. It runs cool even when going full tilt.
----------------------------------------Running 3 single-threaded CPU processes and 1 GPU process puts the Fusion chip in its worst light, as it can't turbo at all. My husband is also very pleased with it. His voice recognition software is running fast and well (even with crunching going on in the background). How long do HCC GPU betas run on you folks' ATI cards? On the A-10 5700, it takes a little under 4 minutes to get to 99.415%, and then another 45 secs or so to finish up and start uploading. My other GPUs are in Linux machines, so I have nothing to compare to. Also, how long do POEM GPU WUs take for you all under Windows? POEM tasks don't seem to be as consistent in time as they used to be, but these are running on the order of an hour to an hour and a quarter. ![]() |

Great to hear its working out for you. Am waiting on the release of AMD's next processor before deciding on building a AMD system. Never owned one so hoping its pretty good. Also looking at the 8000 series GPU coming out shortly. Supposed to be better than the 7000 series.
----------------------------------------My ati 6950 was crunching HCC beta's a little over 1 minute. Last batch produced a few errors for the 1st time. Not sure why but could be I updated CCC a couple weeks ago.

HCC GPU tasks. 5870-<2.5 minutes 5850- <3 minutes 5830-<4 minutes The times can be longer depending on if I'm running CPU tasks and how many. The CPU speed also comes into play. The i7-2600k does much better than the i7-860. Also, how long do POEM GPU WUs take for you all under Windows? POEM tasks don't seem to be as consistent in time as they used to be, but these are running on the order of an hour to an hour and a quarter. POEM pretty much follows the same patterns 5870- 5 tasks in 39 minutes-no CPU tasks running. 2600k 5850- 5 tasks in 49 minutes with 3 CPU tasks running 2600k 5830- 4 tasks in 43 minutes with 4 CPU tasks running. 2600k 5830- 4 tasks in 47 minutes no CPU tasks running. 860 I'm sure Intel's hyper threading has something to do with it but I haven't really tested that.

Well I finished digging potatoes today. I grow two varieties, Yukon Gold and some purple ones ( of which I do not know the variety). I probably got about 30 lbs(13.5kg). I plant about 4lbs(1.8kg) so that is not too bad. I can generally start digging those in early August, then just dig them as I need them until the first frost when I dig them all. The purple variety I got several years ago for nothing and just kept planting all of the leftovers each spring. They grow a little deeper than the Yukons and mature later also. I don't need to dig them until the frost has killed the vines. I got about 5 1/2 - 5 gallon pails of these so I figure about 100 to 110 lbs( 45 to 50 kg). If they are smaller than a golf ball I feed them to the chickens. The next smaller ones get heated in some oil and spices and eaten that way. Some are cut up and fried in olive oil. The larger ones are usually boiled and then mashed. Bright purple mashed potatoes do not necessarily look too appetizing, but they taste the same as regular potatoes. They do add some color to the plate. I read someplace there are some potatoes with orange flesh and some with red flesh. If I can lay my hands on some of those I might try them next year.

Thanks for the GPU timing info, David. I need to learn how to set up to run more than one POEM task at once. It looks as if the GPU component of my A10-5700 is performing similarly to your 5830 on the HCC betas.

It looks as if the GPU component of my A10-5700 is performing similarly to your 5830 on the HCC betas. Get a program called GPU temp and install it. The program will tell you your GPU temp and what % of the GPU is being used to run a task. When running POEM a single task will use way less than 100%. Once you find out at what % POEM is using your GPU I can show you how to run more tasks simultaneously to get better optimization. The HCC GPU app pretty much maxes out the GPU so running more than 1 at a time is not really an option.

Must be nice to have such cool weather. Here in the hellishly hot CA central valley it will be near 100 deg on sunday with a string of 90 deg days to follow,

So, what I would like to know is just how much of a difference this has made from the time it started? I am basicaly at computer duncery level.
