Re: Minnesota Crunchers

On behalf of the Base Campers who have camped out with you at a lake in Minnesota,
fishing, hunting and picking berries - not to mention mosquito bashing -
I would like to thank you very much for your hospitability.

It has been nice to get to know you a little and discuss a bit of everything.
One thing I never found out is why ultimaThule chose this team
- apart from you having very cold winters and being intelligent ....

Glad to have you here for a visit. Feel free to stop by when your in the neighborhood. Have a safe trip. wink

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

My wife would make me start shutting down some of my computers if she saw the electric bill. Last one was $864 dollars, between the computers and the extra electricity for air conditioning. At least my gas bills are better. With all of the heat generated by the 20 computers in my house, not much need for heat in the winter!

OUCH! That's a deficit. Are your computers fairly new or older tech? What part of the world do live in? Think I'll buy some stock in your electric company. laughing

They are mixture of AMD and Intel. Slowest and probably oldest is AMD X4 940 or INTEL Q6600. Newest INTEL is I7 990x and INTEL I7 980x. Newest AMD is 8150. Power supplies range from 475 watts to 1250 watts.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Looking at your sig, you definitely crank up the points. My 2 hex (Westmere) duallys eat enough juice to keep me from building another dually. The latest xeons seem not to use as much as prior ones. Hoping the haswell xeons do better. Thought about a 4p AMD system to keep costs down (built over time) but don't know anything about AMD server chips. Got to see what I can build to get somewhat close to your computing farm but use less electricity. Your electric bill just hurts looking it.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Tired here, or there, not sure tongue

Seriously, found my self to working on USA company again, not as employee but as hired gun.
Need to have tutor a lot before I can blow my own paths, and you know, time zone makes sure that dudes there arrives office around when workday ends up here.
Kind of double shift life again..

It is not easy (never been) to trim brains to receive everything on fast lane when there is twelve hours behind.
Everything goes like vice versa, usyally on double shifts I perform first qualitative part of work and then do all quantitative stuff on evening, but now really forced to do this on another order.
Tired but happy, still able to stand long days without getting tired on middle of them. Somehow still manage to move all that to time when it is aloud to get tired. Kind of hard to explain, I think you know if you know what I mean with this.

So happy to notice that my brains does not confess aging at all.

Cheers!

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Yes, I think I understand. You are making hay while the sun shines, you are young and can take the hours without a problem. Hopefully they are paying well for the hired gun work.
Cheers

I think my living standard will not drop next year much if having some extra job.
Seriously, tax raises will take care that white collar workers will have -1,5% lower real incomes on next year (0% on this year even there was some high general raises on wages).
On another hand unemployed will get 3,5% increase (4,5% this year).

You know, Nordic stuff.

Have some head ache....

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

I was able find some translation of the categories from Finnish and guessed at one but could not get the others:

perhekohtaisten reaalitulojen suhteelliset muutokset - perhekohtaisten relative changes in real income
elakelaispariskunta - Elderly (?)
tyoton - unemployed
yksinhuoltaja - single parent
tyontekijaperhe - ?
toimihenkilopehe - ?
hyvatuloinen toimihenkilopariskunta - ?

I am guessing you are in one of the lower brackets.
Cheers

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

tyontekijaperhe - blue-collar family
toimihenkilopehe - white-collar family
hyvatuloinen toimihenkilopariskunta - white-collar couple

Cheers

Ou sorry.
Those first ones very correct, added missing ones.

>I am guessing you are in one of the lower brackets.
There is no such thing here, everybody is blue collar workers here because tax progression.

With 2950€ (3 560,65 USD) monthly salary Finland beat Italy and Portugal.
5290€ (6 385,03 USD) salary, Finns are last on purchase power.
Red one (100) is European average purchase power. Blue one (Suomi) is Finland.

Two best place to be worker on Europe are Switzerland and Luxembourg.

What I meant was one of the bottom categories on the chart. You were in one which is losing purchasing power.
Thanks
