Only GPU crunch milkyway and WCG. Reading some of the issues on boinc forum about v7, will let that mature a bit before moving up.

I finally got the new server up and running with one processor, I have yet to get another. I have Linux mint 12 installed (I like mint 11 better). Here are the benchmarks. Not the fastest machine, but better than the others I have. I will see how it compares to my others after it has run a few jobs.
----------------------------------------Benchmark results: Number of CPUs: 4 2061 floating point MIPS (Whetstone) per CPU 6655 integer MIPS (Dhrystone) per CPU Cheers

Not bad for harpertown chips. Should be cheap to find another chip on eBay. Not sure if you have dealt with these before but insure you verify stepping of the chip or you will have issues. Mac pros were notorious for using specific version of xeons.

Mac pros were notorious for using specific version of xeons. I will be checking ebay to see what is available. I did some research and you are best off if you can get an exact match. I will also need to get the 1U heatsink with it. I just checked temperatures and it is running at 47 to 50 C. I can tell by the noise that only some of the fans are running. Upon boot they all kick in and it sounds like a hurricane. BTW what would you consider to be a reasonable price(cheap, cheap, cheap) ?Cheers

I wouldn't pay more than 50 bucks but closer to 25. Just saw a few on eBay under 50. If you watch your specs, you can get away buying separate. I did this on my X5670's. You could get lucky buying a pair of higher clocked if someone on eBay is dumping them. I have a pair of heat sinks I think will work for you that you can have free. Can email a photo if you want. Got these on my 1st harpertown build. Didn't know much then, suckers are loud and low profile. Let me know if you want them.

Thanks. I think I will have to stay with passive heat sinks.

I just checked temperatures and it is running at 47 to 50 C. I can tell by the noise that only some of the fans are running. Upon boot they all kick in and it sounds like a hurricane. If you get that temp on full CPU load, congratulations, some very low value indeed. Probably incoming air is relatively cool... Apropoo, servers has double amount of fans needed. Concept is that if one gets broken, then one next to it can take it load to carry also.. On boot up, system will check is every piece OK, that is why it put every fan on max gears.. When it get values, then it drop ventilation to level needed.... On some components like power supplies (yes this is what PS mean on servers, not PS2 port) it is not possible to hot swap fans, there fore there is two of those, so you can hot swap hold PS. Your system will run just fine with one, it just keep creating errors on log about it... Finally you receive another error because error log is full ![]() ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by ultimaThule at May 9, 2012 6:21:59 AM] |

Finally ordered another chip to fill my empty socket. X5650 (hex). Hope to have it installed by the end of next week.
----------------------------------------Joe, any luck finding another processor?
