Re: Minnesota Crunchers

With that many getting axed, the money saved on the electric bill could go for another cruncher. The newer processors are way better on the juice bill compared to 4-5 years ago. Plus more powerful is a bonus. Sandy bridge will bring us better savings plus power to boot. If what I saw on price of these chips, should be my next build.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Finally upgrading all my crunchers to ubuntu 10.10. And updating boinc. Figure it was about time. Will have to wait a bit on gpu crunching. Grabbed a xeon e5472 on eBay. Only one so hopefully find another decent deal on one. $202.00. Not bad compared what's been out there.
Everyone ready for more snow? Looks like west of 94 down to southern Minnesota will get nailed the most. Maybe a few inches here. Stay safe out there! wink

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

I did find something interesting on my small cruncher. A friend sent me a raptor drive he had laying around. Running CEP2, my differences on run time vs actual time is around 10-15 minutes compared to my other crunchers having a difference of around an hour or more using 7200 rpm sata drives. Called micro center about the ssd drives I ordered but put on back order. Should be in stock in about a week. Anyone know how to clone ubuntu from one disk to another?

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Just read the link. Looks good. Thanks. It states under limitations that the Destination disk must be equal or larger than the original disk. If this is the case, won't work for me. I have a 250gb drive now and the ssd is only 32gb. Is there a work around or am I not reading this correctly?

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

I would try a GParted live cd and see if you can't boot with it and shrink your partition to say 31gb. Then in clonezilla clone the partition instead of the entire disk. I think it's doable.

I like to hear that about the efficiency improvement for CEP2! I've been getting around 40 mins difference, and had been thinking for a while about trying an ssd to speed that up.

So, after snooping around on your team list the other day, I placed an order to Microcenter earlier today for two of those 32 GB ssds. No indication on the site that they were out of stock. I hope that the fact that they're running another special on them means they're very certain that more are coming in soon.

It's snowing enthusiastically down here in Iowa, but nothing like what you all got this past weekend.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

When running all processors on cep2, my times increased to 40-50 minutes. Will have to wait for my ssd's to come it to run this project 100%. Backing off to only a few for now.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

A sunny day here. Dusted with snow, so it looks very bright outside. Probably get more snow later in the week. 15F(-9C), but no wind, so fairly pleasant. Maybe Santa will be nice to me and I will find a new cruncher under the tree smile

Cheers
