Hello fellows
----------------------------------------![]() Finally some arctic climate here, statically coldest year since 2003 wich is not actually much because it has been raining mud since then. But looks better... I actually spot nighthalos last night, I have not seen those propably since that year 2003. I really do not know what nighthalo is in English, but as phenomenal it is light effect when there is right size ice crystals on air. It turn artificial light upside down and they create light pillars up to dark sky.. Like these: ![]() ![]() So very rare here on this decade, I think I have see those three time on this millennium.... If weather keep going like this, even Santa Claus might move back. Have not seen him also on years.... Elves still exist, on night time they leave emphty bottles to my cabins ![]() ![]() [Edit 3 times, last edit by ultimaThule at Jan 9, 2010 8:40:30 AM] |

Cheers Öy nöy ![]() Aurora borealis is hole on Van Allen field, sourse is sun... And there fore those always comes from surtain direction.. Then we have Halo And then we have these man-made nighthalos, those can appear on any direction and on any colors. I found out that those are called as Light pillars If you take a look at first image, those halos are exacts same colors as flootlight directly underneath them. First on the left is made by metal halide, there fore it is beautiful blue, like sunlight. Then there is this monochromatic yellow, produced by low pressure sulfur lamp. And then on very right hand side, there is gray nighthalo, born from luminance light. Distance of those totally different colored nighthalos is only few ten yards and those are razor sharp. They are like laser beams and they very clearly start from ground and contunue to sky.. You can literally walk around nighthalos, because their start point is floodlight. Here is another very fine picture..... Halos halos I <3 halos ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Then we have Halo Sun Dogs, yes we get these on very cold days. I have not seen the "northern lights" for a while now, at least a couple years. Right now it is 1 degrees above 0 F. A little chilly. |

The floodlights look like they must be bouncing off of ice crystals in the air. Very pretty. Edit: Read the articles in Wikipedia. Interesting. How they turn out is based on the kind of ice crystal and their relation to the angle of the light source. Cheers

This is from the forecast discusion from the national weather serivce. Both computer models are agreeing with each other that we could have a significant snow event middle to end of next week....time will tell.
