WCG on a portable USB memory stick drive(pen drive)

Most all work places and schools require a logon user name. The login user name usually does NOT have sufficient rights or access to modification of the local harddrive or registry to install or modify programs. Most places will not bend any rules on it.

What if someone sits at or near a computer all day and wants to run the WCG on a computer that does not allow installation of programs for security purposes?

Can any version of WCG or related be installed on a USB pen drive without depending on the registry or modification to the computer?

I got this idea from a posting on the sister site(grid.org) who stated he did it successfully even tho it was advised against. They stated a USB pen drive would wear out from all the writing or atleast heat up.

And if it did work what if someone pulled out(ejected) the device in a hurry during a write would that cause permanent data corruption to the work unit or is there protection against it?

So is the USB pen drive idea feasable for those who want to run at work but don't have sufficient access rights to install?

Thanks.

Re: WCG on a portable USB memory stick drive(pen drive)

I've tried this with the UD Agent

If you first install onto your PC then copy the entire contents of your WorldCommunityGrid folder in Program Files on to a USB Stck. Plugging the stick into another PC and double clicking on UD.exe and you will be crunching again.

I think you will have to go the safe eject route in XP for USB Mem sticks and this should prevent any data corruption.

Please make sure you have permission to use the PC first.

I wish I had found out about this trick a lot earlier on in the WCG.

Try it and let us know how you get on

Re: WCG on a portable USB memory stick drive(pen drive)

p.s. I don't think flash memory wears out in the way that it used to in the very early days but I may be wrong. Mem sticks with apps even whole OS's are now the thing I haven't heard of any wearing out as a consequence.

Having said that I did once wipe out a Disgo Memory stick while installing a copy of windows. I got to the bit where it says would you like to format the partition and there was this huge many Gigabyte partion and 118Mb of unpartitioned space so I formatted it as I thought I'd recovered some space on my hard drive it was only later I discovered the error of my ways d oh

Only fit for the bin after that blushing

Take care rbolo29

Re: WCG on a portable USB memory stick drive(pen drive)

I haven't spent really any time trying to load an operating system on a flash drive yet as there are no benefits for me or motivation. I have heard of people doing it tho..such as linux I think. Linux seems to be the craze and talk at the school I goto.

I have a 1 Gigabyte and 8 Gigabyte(uncompressed) memory stick. Typically, 1 Gig can be had online for low as $25 to $40 now online with rebates. My 8 Gig was bought few months ago for $150. Costco offers 8 gigs for $69 to $99 now..depending. One Manfuacturer offers a compact 64GB USB stick now..on say tigerdirect but cost outrageous at $2,700 and slow at 1 MB/sec. A 4 GB can be had for around $65 right now online.

Most people I know at school have around 128MB to 512MB still. Couple have 1 Gig topped off and some have lower.

I think this emerging and getting cheaper form of technology could have benefits in the future for applications like these and others as it improves.

Good to make everyone aware these possibilites exist and possible uses.
