Repost of thread on Boinc Support for attention of Project Dev
There appears a VAST difference in credit scores between Linux and Windows, this is inconsistant with any Quorum and suggest`s that Linux has a quorum of it`s own. Below are scores from the same machine, you will note that whilst Windows takes longer to do WU`s the score is vastly superior. The Windows averaging 70+ whilst Linux get`s 28 approx....This difference is too huge to contemplate and as many users now go for Linux it means that vast amounts are being treated unfairly. Rectification of this matter is urged asap, even if the linux devices are put in the same quorum as Windows it would benefit. This is not the way forward unless WCG sanctions such. |

Seconded.
This disparity has been a MAJOR sore point and cause of flame wars and people dropping out at other BOINC projects. There has already been some 'unpleasantness' (to put it mildy) here related to this subject. Let's not let it get totally out of hand, like it did at SETI before we do something about it. As to what, I don't know, but if a project like CPDN can totally ignore the benchmarks and assign points according to their own system why can't WCG? I realise a lot of the oldtimers here from United Devices days and probably also the project staff probably don't realise just how nasty this can get. But many who run BOINC take the credit granted more seriously than the science. That is why the imbalance in granted credit has to be rectified as soon as possible. |

Addendum:
Something like Secoreb's formula seems the best best for equalising credit between platforms. As for other projects, or BOINC objecting as lawrencehardin suggests, isn't that basically what SETI, Einstein and Rosetta do nowadays, anyway? Also, considering how much work IBM is doing on the simplified GUI I think they could also pay some attention to the internals of BOINC, ie revise the benchmark /credit system. That would be work far better appreciated by the existing users of BOINC. |

The WCG team is aware of the discrepancy in credit given between platforms. We are working on a temporary solution, and hoping that a more permanent solution will make itself available in a future version of the BOINC client. We have talked to the contributors to the BOINC software, and they are aware of what is happening and will make every effort to remedy the situation.
----------------------------------------I know it seems like it's taking forever to fix it, but pushing a solution out the door too quickly might result in even more problems. I hope everyone can have patience while we figure out the best course of action. [Edit: misspelled discrepancy] [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Oct 30, 2006 3:46:59 PM] |

Just want to bump this problem up because my problem of understanding isn't solved.
The example above is one of my machines (A64 X2 5000+ 2.6GHz) running with dual boot. I know that linux machines always claim lower points because of the benchmark. But this doesn't explain why the quorum doesn't work and give me higher points while running Linux. As anyone can see running under Linux my machine must have met always two other Linux machines to get such a low score.... |

Your machine will always meet two other Linux machines. Work units are not replicated across platforms, because of small potential differences in the results. This is how WCG do it; other projects may do it differently.

Thanks for the fast answer. I'll be back with my Linux machines when the problem is solved with Boinc 5.8 .....
