There appears a VAST difference in credit scores between Linux and Windows, this is inconsistant with any Quorum and suggest`s that Linux has a quorum of it`s own.
----------------------------------------Below are scores from the same machine, you will note that whilst Windows takes longer to do WU`s the score is vastly superior. The Windows averaging 70+ whilst Linux get`s 28 approx....This difference is too huge to contemplate and as many users now go for Linux it means that vast amounts are being treated unfairly. Rectification of this matter is urged asap, even if the linux devices are put in the same quorum as Windows it would benefit. carl.h.... its entirely correct, each OS has its own quorum due incompatibilities. Plz look for thread that mentions 55%. That's why a 'structures' based credit system looks fairest, eliminating all OS premutative influences. When a revision happens....don't know when!
----------------------------------------......saw a new record keeper on WOS .... someone wanting 74 credit for 2.79 hours job, where i claimed for same WU 13 on 1.6 hrs...go figure that and conclude that at least the quorum 3 weeds out any xml modifiers or recompilers. Visit Rom World as the root is BOINC, not WCG!

Appreciate the answer Sekeorb, the info is a team members who is a big cruncher. Unfortunately due to this problem he IS looking at changing projects to where he will get a fairer score.
Is WCG officially looking at the problem ? Is their a possible solution in the pipeline ? If so is there an approximation of when this might be solved ? Other Boinc projects have a more equal scoring for Linux and Windows so I`m presuming it`s a WCG thing ???? |

carl.h,
----------------------------------------dont know the answers to the time frame of revision. My simpleton proposal which might have a quick implementation time is taking the 0.55 factor of Linux on standard benchmark and use that deviser on the quorum 3 middle man credit thus the sum e.g. 25 x 7 / 0.55 = 318 WCG points. (claim times BOINC-WCG conversion factor in general divided by the Linux/WOS benchmark differential) Seke

Hi carl.h,
Any community advisor push this up the ladder for us please. This is a BOINC issue related to BOINC points on all the projects. Start at http://boinc.berkeley.edu/ and find a message board / mail list there. My guess is that the Windows compilers do better optimizing on the benchmarks, much better than they do on general scientific programs. The Linux GCC compiler is (I suspect) about the same on both benchmarks and programs. (Yes, I am thinking about all those articles in the last 10-15 years claiming that some compiler writers were developing special optimizations for benchmarks.) Lawrence |

I`ll do that Lawrence...
----------------------------------------It does intrigue me though that with some Boinc projects this is not the case at all.....Which is why I presumed it was project based ! Elevated to David Anderson but I would still like to know if the project itself will be doing something about it which I`m sure they could like others. This will enhance the user base by fairly attributing points to Linux based machines ! [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Oct 26, 2006 1:40:22 PM] |

Unfortunately, the problem with the difference in benchmarking is unlikely to be addressed adequately by BOINC, even if they were inclined to do so.
Casual observation of this issue on various projects and forums reveals that it is not consistent between projects. As has been previously stated some do not have the problem at all and some have as much as 800% difference. It seems to depend on the type of work undertaken and which processor resources are most utilized by that project. WCG have a consistant difference of 55%. This would need to be corrected by the formula proposed by Sek "25 x 7 / 0.55 = 318 WCG points." or BOINC points x 1.818 = WCG BOINC points. Then apply the 7x multiplier for WCG points as is the norm. The first part of this would need to be done, by WCG, before the points were reported to BOINC statistics in order to create a fair distribution of points between the different OSs, for those who are interested in overall, cross project, BOINC scores. Hi ozylynx,
----------------------------------------You are right. I was not thinking. We (WCG) can't play around with BOINC scores without igniting a firestorm, but it is possible for us to modify the local WCG points awarded. Of course, this just changes the locale of the storm. . . . . Why not make a suggestion in SUGGESTION / FEEDBACK? There is too much going on right now, but something like this might be introduced with a new project if people are thinking about it.Lawrence Added: Here is the thread in Suggestions to talk about suggested changes: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=9407[Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Oct 27, 2006 12:19:00 AM] |

how about giving 1 point per WU completed ?
it's the finished product thats needed. |
