Hi, I've been using BOINC to run several BOINC projects including World Community Grid. I have only seen FightAIDS@Home projects being worked on with my computers. I have checked all three of World community projects for my computer. Once before and now again, the BOINC client finished a work unit for FightAIDS@home and has not asked for a new work unit. The last time this happened, I reset the project and it didn't help so I detached from the project for a few days and reattached and was finally able to get work. Is there something I don't know or is this unusual?

What message did BOINC give when it got no work?

It wasn't that it tried to download a work unit. It just never asked the server for one.

Seems clear enough to me. BOINC had too much work cached, so it stopped downloading new work and concentrated on SETI for a while. BOINC uses some complicated scheduling algorithms so it doesn't miss deadlines, downloads the optimum amount of work, and (on average) achieves the project weighting you have chosen.
Let BOINC manage its own workload. Only people with too much time to spare try and improve on the automatic behaviour. |

The computer hasn't suspend work fetch. The SETI project only has four hours left at 65% for its current work unit. In fact, I was able to start a new project "Rosetta" and download it's first WU while WCG is still idle with no units to work on.
I have tried suspending the WCG project and re-activating it. Telling it not to seek further work units and then telling it to reseek work units. Unattaching the projet and reattaching the project. And Updating in between each request. All with the intent to wake it up, with no success. |

Since u have pre-empting to keep the WU in memory, the acid test to perform is to go to Projects tab and suspend ALL BUT WCG. Then select WCG and hit update. If still nothing comes, i'll be lost for words.
----------------------------------------How Hi / Low is the WCG % on the sum of your projects i.e. is it getting 5%, 10% 50%. If e.g. 5%, it will wait its turn much longer. BOINC has the smarts to wait with work retrieval until it knows it can handle it.....seen it on various projects like Rosetta....i.e. nothing in the work buffer until it is up for it. With BOINCview u can actually see the Long Term and Short Term Debt for each project. If WCG is negative, it should not be pulling work until it's build up enough time credit. cheers.

To Add, according to BOINCview 2 of the 4 projects i run have status "Overworked". Neither have Work Units in the buffer!

Well, I finally reset the project, (what exactly does reset the project do?) and it has downloaded a work unit.

Well, we hope u took the time of reading the explanation above as to the why u were not getting work!
----------------------------------------Reset removes all remaining project files related to WCG and returns the LTD/STD to zero.

For the interested that want to know why they sometimes do not get work:
---------------------------------------- FOLLOW-UP: Duration Correction Factor JM7 posted a nugget of information I missed about how DCF is used in this S@H post . Actually, ROM missed a little. A score less than 1 means that your computer finishes work faster than expected for its benchmarks. A score that is higher indicates that it finishes slower than expected for its benchmarks. It is calculated as a safety for the CPU scheduler (finish on time) and work fetch (not too much), therefore under estimates are corrected very quickly (single step) and over estimates are corrected much more cautiously. Thanks John. ----- Rom
