FAAH Monster crunching Machines

It takes my PC about 9 hours to pump out 1 FAAH result. I think that seems a bit slow.

With whats currently available to the general public whats the fastest a PC can pump out a FAAH result? Also, what kind of hardware would that take?

Here is the fastest PC I could find:

I bet you guys/gals could find faster.

Re: FAAH Monster crunching Machines

qafdemo, i think if u go thru your BOINC Results Status list u can probably see a reasonable wide spectrum of partners u had in the Quorum 3 sets. Quickest i've seen there is 2.5 / 3 hours....i do 7.5/8 CPU hours normally. If 2.5 / 3 hours and run on dual/quad/multiprocessor machines, that's impressive, since mine is P4 2.53ghz HT....notwithstanding all sorts of 'socially engineered' pressures to go out and buy a faster machine, that what i do is not taxing the machine at all except for a web-radio maybe. So, except for a new laptop to improve the on-the road, this 4.8 year old box is not going for a long long time......DC's are meant to use spare cycle, and that's what they get!

Re: FAAH Monster crunching Machines

I run a liquid cooled custom built AMD X2-4400(dual core) machine with 2 gigs Corsair high performance RAM(1.24GB in use), WD Raptor 74GB(SATA), ATI Radeon X800(256MB) with some other nice components. I built it 2 years ago now and it has run 100% CPU ever since going 24/7 strong. I notice no interference except when I try and run DOOM 3 my system heats up alot so I have to temporarily shutdown BOINC for safety.

My Crunch time per FAAH work unit is around: 5 hours and 11 minutes currently. My machine is not overclocked as quality is more important to me then slightly extra quantity with risky results. The memory is clocked lower then top speed.

My Crunch time per HDC unit is around: 2 to 2.5 hours(variable).

Keep in mind this is a dual core machine so it is virtually outputting a work unit (time/2) or ~ 2.5 hours. More if counting HDC units. Depending on how you want to look at it or compare.

Toms hardware benchmarks the new Intel Core2duo's as performing very high in most all areas. AMD still leads in Flops Point Operations(FLOPs) done in memory by a significant margin. AMD also can more safely sustain 100% CPU usage. I have no experience with the new Core2duo nor the upcoming CoreQuadduo coming next month.

Anyone have the new Core2duo or results to report on it pertaining to this project?

Re: FAAH Monster crunching Machines

Interesting... have a dual-core AMD with 2GB Corsair. Running pretty much FAAH 24x7. Average result time for me seems to be 9hours +/- 1 hour?!

Re: FAAH Monster crunching Machines

I have custom built computers for years now as a hobby. Both Intel and AMD. It has become somewhat of an art for me. I can't say why your system would be so slow compared to mine. I rarely ever see anything over 5.5 hours...even if I'm using my computer for a fairly intensive task and it doesn't slow at all even with DOOM 3..just heats up like toaster...lol.

confused Re: FAAH Monster crunching Machines

Hi tangra,
I agree with rbolo29. This is peculiar. Are you getting those times from your Results Page? What sort of CPU do you have? How many threads are you running?

Re: FAAH Monster crunching Machines

There is a Tangra in the BOINCstats who has not turned in a BOINC result for a while now......then there are 2 possibilities....chance of mistaken identity or UD throttle? Given that a Tangra turned in a result 11 hours ago, that leaves one option.....60%.

Re: FAAH Monster crunching Machines

I only do FAAH when the server runs out of HDC, so I don't have many samples. I currently have two systems crunching:

AMD X2 4800+ overclocked to 2.64 GHz (about FX60 speed): 4.38, 4.99, 5.09 hours. HDC range for large number of results is from 0.74-2.34 hours, median ~1.15.

C2D E6400 overclocked to 3.5 GHz (not the highest possible, but pretty good for a 24/7 stable crunching rig): 2.76, 2.89, 2.98, 3.17 hours. HDC range 0.52-1.71, median ~0.83.
