HDC beta, graphics

Hello,

I have an odd... "issue" with the HDC graphics. When I click on the graphics button, nothing happens for about 4-5 minutes. I can close the BOINC manager, go on to other things, and then about 4-5 minutes after I hit the button, the graphics appear. The first time this happened I had close the BOINC manager and was surfing this site. I thought it was a pop-up.

My PC does not slow down during this time, and there is no other anomalous activity. The graphic looks fine. There is just an unusually long delay before it appears.

I'm running BOINC 5.4.11. I'm running a couple other projects (but no alpha projects or optomized clients). This does not occur for other projects (even other WCG projects). My PC is an AMD Athlon XP 3200+, with 1.0Gb of ECC RAM, running Windows XP SP2 (fully patched). I'm not running any other distributed clients. I have Norton Antivirus 2006 and A-squared anti-trojan, neither of which are reporting anything. My video card is an ATI Radeon 9550, 256Mb VRAM. The drivers were new when I re-built my PC about six months ago. (Since the latest driver is from April 2004, I don't expect a newer one.)

Thank you.

Re: HDC beta, graphics

I have a similar problem under Linux, kernel 2.4.33.3, XOrg 6.9 with an ATI 9600XT running fglrx driver.

The latest Windows XP drivers from ATI do support the Radeon 9550. Go to the
ATI's WinXP driver page
. The driver on Micro$oft's site is waay out of date.

Re: HDC beta, graphics

Beta 5.05 has fixed this old problem I reported for 5.04:
The graphic view has alternating horizontal bars across the background. I could consider this a texturing effect, except that the bars go across the text, rendering the text unreadable.
Everything looks good.

However, the graphic lines for Best Energy (C) seem curiously compressed to the left. The red line only extends to the start of the B in Best Energy, leaving an immense amount of blank space. I don't know if this same foreshortening is happening in Energies (B) or not. It might be.

Re: HDC beta, graphics

My new Beta 5.06 FAAH work unit has the red line extending to the 's' in Best Energy (C). This is much better.

Re: HDC beta, graphics

My current Beta 5.06 FAAH work unit has the red line extending to the beginning of the 'n' in Best Energy (C) while the green line above it extends slightly past that to the end of the 'n'. So something that I was regarding as fixed length is actually variable length. Hmm . . The green line just started redrawing, so it is just displaced a few pixels from the red. That makes sense.

In general, the crosses in the Energies (B) line up around the extreme left, but I have just seen 2 crosses being drawn above the 'rg' in Energies so that situation is much improved as well.
