Work submitted under "No more work" flag not recognized

On a number of occassions, whilst 'fine tuning' my little farm, I have sent in completed work units, using BOINC, and they remain listed in my device manager as "work in progress' until such time as they expire.

This happens when the "no more work" button is pressed in Boinc manager and I wait for the work to complete before major alterations to whichever computer I need to work on.

Most recently this happened yesterday, when I wanted to change hard drives in a computer to conduct an experoiment faah0832_ bdb471_ mx1rq9_ 01 and then change it back today at the completion of this experiment faah0833_ bdb322_ mx1s65_ dry_ 09. This has happened on many occassions but I put it down to something wrong on my end. I no longer think so.

This time I even went to 'projects" and clicked "update" it sent the work back, I watched it in the transfers window and repoted in messages that it had been successful. I did a similar thing on previous accassions without paying too much attention as I assumed it would just work and m=no further problems would arise.

faah0833_ bdb322_ mx1s65_ dry_ 09 has since been recieved. I went back to the computer and although it reported sending this work at 03:15 it was still in my work list. I pressed 'update' again at 03:35and it disappeared from my work list and showed as pending validation in results status. This still appears to constitute a bug though.

Re: Work submitted under "No more work" flag not recognized

Question is: What was the label right hand side in the work tab of subject Workunit saying? Probably it said "Ready to Report". It's a safety feature. First the result-files are send. Only when it is confirmed that all files have been send/received, does a local flag change the entry in the work tab to RtR. Then when on the next replication, will it send the report to tell WCG servers, things are done and clears the entry from the queue. Not only safety, but also transmission efficiency is involved. BOINC tries to save the RtR message until next scheduled contact.Pushing the Update button, forces an extra contact with server to close the transaction out with the conditions above.

Here a summary from the unofficial BOINC Wiki :
Ready to Report

General

This status indicator shows that a Result has finished and that all related data has been uploaded to the Data Server. This is the final status that will show in the BOINC Manager. After the Result has been reported it will be deleted from the local Host.

Results will be reported automatically at the following triggers:

1. New work is needed. Completed work will be reported at the same time.
2. The Deadline is less than 24 hours away.
3. The Result has been in the Ready to Report status longer than the Work Buffer setting.

Note: There is a bug in the 4.4x Versions of the BOINC Client Software that causes Results to be reported immediately after the status changes to Ready to Report.

ciao

Re: Work submitted under "No more work" flag not recognized

Thanks Sekerob.

I actually managed to save both of the most recent ones, those listed in my first post.

This is a real trap come maintenanceoops I went all seppo, maintainance time though. Imho if I have selected 'no more work' flag and then force the client to send the completed work back to the server, the client really should assume there isn't going to be another communication.

Just a thought.

Re: Work submitted under "No more work" flag not recognized

Yes, but long as there is still a single WU left, it will try to combine the phase 2 reporting. If the queue is empty, that's a bug to report at the BOINC developers forum......

it remains, as this morning there were 3 to report and the network was set to permanent connection. On reflection neither of the 3 conditions mentioned in the wiki were met, but agree, when the second WU was reported, it should have dragged the RtR along for the 1st. On the other hand (that's why lawyers should have only 1), it's an easy glance, to see what has been reported over night.

cheers

Re: Work submitted under "No more work" flag not recognized

That's true but not my situation.

In both instances I was waiting to work on the computer and delayed the work until the assignment had completed. When it did complete I then asked it to update and saw the task upload to the server. Job done thinks I and get on with my task.

On previous occassions this has been to reformat HDDs and the like, imagine my surprise when returning to Device manager and seeing 'work in progress' against the task I'd put my life on hold to complete.

Older and wiser now.
