confused Apparent reduced throughput after shutdown and reboot

I understand the problem of corrupt tasks being discarded, but can anyone tell me why a normal running task sometimes shows that it has completed less throughput after a normal computer shutdown. For example, the task shows 80% completion before shutdown and then only 55% when the computer is restarted. The computer shuts down cleanly (no hard crash out of the OS etc) and reboots cleanly and the agent loads OK. Should I shut down the task manually before logging off?

This is checkpointing. Each work unit saves its progress as frequently as possible. Clearly, yours wasn't able to save anything between 55 and 80%.

By the way, you can edit your posts, you don't have to delete them and repost.

Re: Apparent reduced throughput after shutdown and reboot

Thanks. Can you force a checkpoint? Does exiting the application do this?

Sadly, no. It's also not easy to see when a checkpoint takes place. Best not to worry about it.

Re: Apparent reduced throughput after shutdown and reboot

The UD Application View shows each check point. When the green line reaches the right edge and starts over, a check point is written. After the first check point, there is a red line on the graph. Usually several check points are written every hour, but some work units produce very few check points. A very few never write a check point.

Re: Apparent reduced throughput after shutdown and reboot

Been maintaining a table of differently segmented FAAH (think we talk Fighting Aids???)...... not seen any, nor have others ever mentioned a FAAH WU recursing from 80 to 55%.....there is simply no way of divvying up something in equal portions, save a segment, then go back 25% to 55% i.e. there is no rhyme to this.

Help Defeat Cancer until now are 4 segments i.e. 25%. If interrupted, they do go back to 0, 25, 50, 75% respectively.

Anyone else seen this who happens to read this post?

PS: Table here: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/...thread=8331&offset=14

For saving your work and resume up to the second, see posts related to proper PC hibernation or this: http://www.wcgwiki.org/en/general/hibernate.cfm

I had a Boinc HDC WU reset from ~9% back to 6.250% on a reboot last night.
